Help me place the "TRIUMPH" on the rear

The resto is complete. I have the triumph nameplate for the rear of the TR3 but there are no signs of any holes where it should mount. Did a 1960 have this installed originally? I assume it's centered but how about top to bottom? Anyone have a measurement? I'm kinda afraid to drill into this thing :eeek:

Re: Help me place the "TRIUMPH" on the rear

The center hole is 2 5/8" below the front(top) edge of the rear body panel. If you have the truck handle pointed straight down it points at center hole. If you had body work done on the rear panel you might want to feel around on the underside of the rear body, inside the trunk (sorry "boot"). The holes may just be filled with body filler and painted over,in which case you can just, carefully, push the filler out. If you have to drill, make a template on masking tape and drill through it.

Does this help? From my (former) TR3B, an untampered with example.

Re: Help me place the "TRIUMPH" on the rear

Here's a pic of where the rear Triumph plate is placed on my car. It's a '61 TR3A. The bottom edge of the plate is 3" below the edge of the boot opening and the right side of the 'U' appears to be centered under the Boot's lock tab. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I'm just gonna do it. There is no evidence of it ever being there, even from the inside. Thanks for the measurements and pictures

I'm in the same boat and the original owner said there was never one there. No evidence of holes. I'm torn about adding something that wasn't there on a 95% original survivor from 58. Nobody seems to have a good insight on it's being something that happend.

I'm going to go ahead an install this new badge. Logic: people who look at the rear of this car all ask what it is. Experts will probably look at it like the car is incomplete and missing a badge (even though I have no evidence that one was ever installed - even from the factory).

I had to do that when the restorer thoughtfully welded up the holes. A problem I encountered a year later was cracks in the clear coat radiating from the holes.

I don't know how to prevent it but if you have a two stage paint job it's something to be aware of.

All set! Thanks for all your help. Snaps are tricky had to open the mouths a bit to get to accept the peg. Definitely have to ream the holes a little but the real trick is the trunk is curved and the badge is straight. You have to ben the badge a little between each letter. Luckily Moss makes real chromed steel and it bent easily. If anyone has snapped pot metal, believe me I was sweating the first bend not knowing what was in there.
