Smooth case transmission help please

I know my second gear/synchro at the very least will have to be replaced in my bugeye at some point. One of my strategies is to rebuild another smooth case transmission that Bill gave me so that I do not have down time. I know it will take some time to locate the parts I need. I have never rebuilt or inspected a transmission before and need some information.

1)How do you know if a transmission is close ratio or not?
2)How can you tell if a part is worn and needs to be replaced without having a new one to compare it to?
3)Would it be worth it to take it in some where and just ask them what needs to be replaced?
4)Besides the second gear/synchro, what else is typically replaced in a rebuild?

Answer- use a ribbox, don't use a smoothcase for anything except show!

I have two smooth-case transmissions, which are free to anyone who wants them. I'll list them on Craigslist, and if no takers, they're off to the recycling depot.

I don't have first-hand info, but I have heard that they are difficult to rebuild. Lack of parts, and some things require machining. The ribcase transmissions are far superior, and you can get a good one for not a lot of money. It seems like the logical thing to do.

Steve, I may be interested in one of those smooth case transmissions.

Thought I read some place that rib case internals could be fit into the smooth case. Anyone know if and how this is done?

Yes rib case bits will go in a smooth case. How, no clue. Why? Use a ribcase.

Miss Agatha is going to have a ribcase sometime this fall. Unless you are going Concourse why not? Not too many judges even that have a clue.

I'm not sure why I'd want the smooth case, even if it's only the case. I never seem to be able to leave anything stock so it's not a concourse thing. But, If it's possible to have the aesthetic of the smooth case with the parts availability of the rib case, then why not.

I've read about the rib case gear into a smooth somewhere (Can't for the life of me remember where) but I rememeber it involving some machining of the casing on the internals...

I just had my smooth case rebuilt and 1275(ribcase) gearset added by Quantum Mechanics in Oxford, CT. I'm sorry I can't answer your questions, but John did tell me that there is a slight bit of machine work to be done in order for it to work.

I did it to maintain the original look for possible concours judging while also getting reliability and readily available parts.

personally, I think just giong the ribcase route is a better and cheaper idea.

I put ribcase internals in a smooth case about 25 years ago, but can't recall the specifics. As I recall, it was not very involved. That is what is running in my car right now (when I can find time to drive it).
