Mayflowers are <span style="font-style: italic">tres</span> cool. Also <span style="font-style: italic">tres</span> impractical in today's traffic; been there, done that, got the rude gestures!
Mine actually cruised very nicely a 55-60mph on dead level roads, but any serious incline could bring it down to 1st gear. Good news is that 1st gear was synchromesh. Bad news was that there were only two more gears above first, and the space between 1st and 2nd was big enough to drive the proverbial truck through! :frown:
That little flathead, true to Standard-Triumph, was a very willing little engine. But 38 hp just wasn't enough for a car weighing well over one ton and having only three forward speeds and the aerodynamics of a box truck backing up! However, like so many other smaller British cars of the period, for the city and around the quiet countryside it was wonderful!
