Educate me on the Midget 1500

I'll start of by saying I'm a Triumph guy. I know a bit about Spitfires and Heralds. So when a co worker bought a '79 Midget and had some emissions control questions I figured I'd help out. Anyway, the car is missing the air rail, smog pump and cat. After looking at it closer, there are no provisions in the head for the air rail. The car does have an EGR valve and 2 sets of mounts for throttle cables. I'm guessing he has a '74-76 motor transplanted into it, or maybe the head has been swapped. Here are the casting/spamping #'s, block: FP6339UE, head: TKC3239, and the vin: GAN6UL213757G. The tag in the door jamb says it was built June of 1978. The car needs a cat and the SP inorder to pass emissions. Any help would be great, thanx!

You might find more folks who can help over in the Spridgets forum... more Sprite and Midget folks over there.

Wish I could help, but I don't know much about the later motors.

The 1500 was a Triumph motor and a fairly poor one at that with various weaknesses. It was a last ditch attempt to keep the model going a little longer with a smog rated motor.

The earlier 1275 engines make a far better car.

seriously, while not as robust an engine it ran for years in the Spitfire. It certainly did suffer for all the choking smog stuff but, in British tune was also the first true 100mph Midget
