Rear Axle Oil Seals

I have an accumulation of oil on the inside of the drums and planning to replace the oil seals, and the shoes. It looks fairly straightforward. Anything I should be aware of before undertaking this? Any special tools required? Should I replace the bearings as well?

Thanks in advance

Don't replace the bearings, general consensus is that replacement bearings from the usual suspects are not as good as the originals - so, if the originals are fine, leave them.

The large axle nuts are handed - right and left hand thread.

The book says fill the diff till the oil flows out the hole. Many (including me) fill to a level below the hole (correct level is if you can just touch the oil with your pinkie when inserted in the hole)

have fun!

The "Big Nut" you need to get those nuts off is 1 7/8". Find someplace like a Tractor Supply and you can find for < $10.00, close to $20 from Sears. And the DS is LH Thread I believe. The Righty Tighty , Lefty Loosey does not work on that side.

As I recall I made my own gasket out of gasket material and a supply of RTV. Has not leaked since.
