Transmission seals- how to remove?

If this has been a prior topic I apologize.

I can't figure out how to remove the rear oil seal cap to install a new one.It seems to have been crimped in 3 places to hold it on. The service manual shows a special tool that looks as though a graduated screw was threaded into the drive shaft opening to pull the cap off.

The other pain is the oil seal in the bushing for the speedometer drive. No way to grab it to remove.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Michael,

For the rear seal, you'll need to pry up the crimps to knock off the metal cap. A sharp chisel will usually do. If you have a Dremel with a cutoff wheel, and a steady hand, you could make some short slices (either parallel or perpendicular) that will make it a little easier. Pop the new one on and use a chisel to crimp into place.

I've never tried to replace the bushing for the speedo drive, so can't help there.

if its just a regular lip seal, you can use one of those slide hammers with the fingers that will lock in there. You can get one of the slide hammer kits cheap at harbor freight. It works good on a lot of things like that.

Thanks.

The fit seems so tight that getting anything in the crack will be difficult. I guess I'll have to destroy it to save it...

Gerard-

Got it done with a sawsall (don't ask).

Do you put any gasket sealer at the metal to metal when you press on the new seal cap?

Thanks again for all of the help.

That sounds a little frightening... :hammer:

A little sealer wouldn't hurt.

Reminds me of the time I let my young son remove the differential from the race Midget. He wanted to help Dad get ready for the next race so why not?

On the way home from work, I called him and asked how it went. He told me had some trouble getting the differential itself out but he had successfully used the air chisel (what did he say?!?!) to break it loose from the axle housing!

Needless to say, I was very anxious during the rest of the drive home - an excruciating 35-40 minutes! All I could picture was a destroyed diff housing.

Luckily all it took was a little clean up with a file to smooth things out with no real damage done. Evidently the vibration and force of the air chisel broke it loose very quickly.

Overkill? I'd certainly say so! The son learned something and more importantly, so did I! LOL!
