Can't find old post about insulation/sound deaden

A while back there was a post here with some pics of an installation of some isulation/sound deadening stuff for the floor.
I've been searching for that post but can't find it.
I believe the stuff was called "Fat Mat". It was silver looking stuff that was installed under the carpet.
Anybody know more about that stuff, or something similar?

Also, when I order a carpet kit for my TR6, should I order the underlayment kit too,...or just install some other insulation type stuff?

When I bought my carpet kit I got the underlay material as well. I think it's made a big different, not only in sound deadening but in making the carpet appear and feel more plush. It was not hard to install, I just made sure all the sheet metal was relatively clean, and then used spray on headliner adhesive to stick the various cut to fit pieces in place. Then another coat of adhesive on top of the insulation to apply the carpet. I didn't use to many of the supplied fasteners, I don't really plan on removing the carpet anytime soon so I didn't use them. The only area I thought was tricky was the area where the firewall meets the transmission tunnel cover, that one piece was kind of hard to fit. I got my kit, both the underlay and the carpet, from TRF and I was very satisfied with the quality. I put that in three years ago and it still looks brand new today.

I think I've seen the silver stuff you're talking about. I believe custom car stereo shops sell it for insulating around speaker boxes and subwoofers and such. There is also a similar product that they sell for inside engine compartments and the undersides of hoods, but thats more of a heat insulation than a padding and that stuff is very expensive. You could use just about any kind of insulation you want I guess, although certain types of insulation are more suited to the conditions encountered in a car interior, especially a convertible, than others. The advantage to getting the kit from the vendors is that all the pieces are already cut to fit the various areas of the interior, so it saves you from having to cut and fit pieces yourself and, potentially, screw up and waste some of it.

Another product is Dynamat. They make several different typs. Most provide both sound deadening and insulation. One side is foil, the other sort of a rubberized asphalt material. The foil side is installed facing the heat source, to reflect. They have plain adhesive material for use inside doors and also hood liners. It's good stuff, works well, but not cheap. FWIW - even living in the desert southwest I never use adhesive to install the carpet. If you get caught in a cloudburst those pads can soak up a lot of water. The only sure way to dry them (without growing mushrooms while you wait) it to pull them out and hang them in the sun.

Can't speak for 6's but on the 3 & 4 the factory fasteners make removing the carpet, well, a 'snap'.

I ordered a Carpet, and underlayment kit from TRF. The guy there also recomended not glueing those pieces in. So I took the advice and ordered the installation kit with all the snaps and stuff.
I still think I'm gonna put some of that FatMat stuff down before I install the underlayment, and carpet.
I'm probably gonna put some FatMat inside the door panels too,...since I've got new door glass for both doors. May as well install the Fatmat while I have the doors apart and the glass out of the way.

I made my carpets myself for my Midget and have no snaps.
I used a spray adhesive that ends up much like post-it adhesive. Sticky enough to keep everything in place, but also very easy to remove the carpets and underlay for drying.
It does need a 'respray' when putting the carpets back though.
I got it at an artist store.
Just one more alternative.

I use the Dynamat Extreme in all of my cars, I bought several bulk packs on eBay a while ago. The nice thing about it is how thin and flexible it is. I did the entire cabin of my M3 with it, and it feels like you are in a tomb. I have used thicker materials in the past, they make the stock interior trim fit strange. When I do my body-off, the TR6 is getting the Dynamat Extreme (that thin Fatmat looks the same), applied tight to the floor, cabin walls and doors. Then I will use an underlay kit and a Wilton Wool carpet set, all with stock hold downs. It will look stock, but work far better. Even if you decide against a Dynamat type product on the floors, get a few sheets and stick them to the inside of your door skins, the door will have a high quality sound when closing.
