I think I'm going to be sick ....engine noise exp

Engine's making an intermittent expensive sounding noise. Does not do it when cold and has been intermittent when warm but is becoming more frequent. Only does it between 700 and 1k rpm. Oil pressure is still great at a needle width above the 75 mark hot at cruise and half way between 50 and 75 at hot idle. I've pulled the plugs wires one by one and there is no noticeable change in the noise. I have not seen any metal in the oil as of yet though the filter may be catching it. Oil was clean at the last oil change 500 miles ago.

Just to make sure you don't have a chipped gear in the trans, does the noise go away when you hold the clutch in and put it in gear while runing?

You have checked valve adjustment, correct?

Pull the fan belt off.

That will eliminate crank pulley loose or cracked (and under pressure), water pump, fan blade and alternator.

And, yes, you can run it for a couple of minutes without the belt.

Does the noise change with clutch engagement?
Any big, new dents in the sump?

You have a piston collapsed or broken, or even a rod bearing out, pulling plug wires while running should give you some change in noise, you said none, right?

Holding good oil pressure would cause me to place rod/main bearing issues on the "hold" page for right now...not eliminate, but hold....distributor cap not seated, banging rotor.....distributor shaft or bearing loose.....just things I'd be looking for.

You use a hose yet to more closely identify the area?

Seemed (and now that I am in "reply" mode, can't see the video) the noise was more pronounced near fan/water pump/ distributor area.

Re: I think I'm going to be sick ....engine noise exp

Tore the front of the engine down bit by bit and have narrowed the problem down to 2 items. 1st was a slight loose harmonic dampener and the second may be a bad timing gear tensioner. With the harmonic dampener tightened back up the noise reduce a bit but did not go completely away. With the timing cover off I found quite a bit of play on the far side of the chain. I don't know if thats normal or if something is wrong. At least it appears that it wasn't a rod getting ready to go out with a bang.

Well, noise sounded right, up front-ish.
If it was mine, I'd pull the chain and sprockets. You might find a broken link, or a chipped tooth.

What am I seeing 8-10 o'clock on the lower sprocket?

good question. Most likely a camera illusion but I'll have to take a closer look.

Ick.

R&R tensioner, check to see the spring is intact and its "ratcheting" mechanism isn't hanging up for some reason. That slack on the "pull" side of the chain ain't right fer sure.

Is there any evidence of chain rub on the inside of the cover?

Re: I think I'm going to be sick ....engine noise

:iagree: The chain should not be loose at all on the opposite side of the tensioner. Either stretched/worn chain or the tensioner needs attention. JMHO. PJ

Re: I think I'm going to be sick ....engine noise

And, you get the chain and sprockets off, you can hold the chain and compress-extend a couple of links and see if it's just flat wore out.
Make sure the keys/dowels aren't loose or wobbled, take extra care when removing the cam sprocket nut to see how tight it was.
Hard to go back and re-check that after the fact.
Good oil pressure probably not the cam wobbling around in the block.

Well its all back together and has been driven. New dual row timing chain and a new tensioner. The noise is gone and hopefully will remain gone. On a side note the timing with the single row went from 13º to 11º with the dual row chain.
