Old Trucks

I've thinking of Steve S's old pickup (similar to one my Dad had 40 years ago). I thought I show three old trucks I see all the time.

This old pair of Chevy trucks is parked behind the Quik-Check convenience store near Rutgers football stadium (in New Brunswick, NJ). They are both in regular use by a local business. I've seen them in this location for at least 15 years.

And this similar GMC pickup has been parked in front of Woolley's Fish Market on Rt. 9 (near Freehold, NJ) for at least 20 years. It is also moved and driven on a regular basis.

Nice trucks. Wanted one in the early 80's. Couldn't find a Chevy or GMC. Found a '53 Ford, then found a nice black '53 Dodge flat head 6 with the "Fluid Drive" transmission. Really enjoyed that truck. ? 16" wheels I think. Eight track player with a Dolly Parton tape in it.... Could walk through mud and snow with that narrow profile tire. I blew a hole in a piston on the way to the hospital when the twins were born. When I tore it down, I went to the local NAPA store and they had the piston on the self in 1984. Pretty amazing. Lot's of fun.

Me too. Really like the look of those "narrow noses".

JP, would love to post pictures, but sad to say that I am still on dial-up and it would take ages to post pictures.
I will tell you that the Pete is a 288M...the first year of the neddle nose tilt hood. I have factory Pete front/rear air suspension, air ride cab, siding 5th wheel, hardwood floors, 359 air-con, full stainless steel rear fenders, custom made 100GAL Pete tanks, 3406 Cat power with a 14/6/13 trans and the best bit is that I have made it a long hood.
I will be sorting out the front bumper next month and am not sure how large I want to go...22"?

Impressive - (had to google all that to see what it was) Is there an intended outcome for this other than "because it's there."

Yes, I remember the truck as a child and the price...at the time was right. I had just sold my "old" show car and wanted another project. We have a horse farm and have since purchased a 1973 Streamliner 9 horse trailer and have a set of 28-6" doubles to haul hay.
You should see it in magazines next year...hoping. It is BRG with black and gold stripes on the outside. The interior has a wool headliner, wilton rugs and connolly hides on the doors and seats in tan and chocolate brown.
I have spent the large portion, just need time to complete.

Neat... There is an active chapter of the American Truck Historical Society here in Alberta, with members owning some very interesting old commercial trucks, I always enjoy their display every year at a vintage farm meet just north of Calgary...

A few photos from their forum... https://forums.aths.org/InstantForum2010/ATHS-Discussion-Forums/Truck-Show-Calendar-and-Photos

1932 Mack AP that belongs to a local collector, one of only six built by Mack for construction of the Boulder Dam... Yes, that's another old Mack behind it...

David, glad to hear the Pete is coming along. I think the last time I saw it you had just painted it. They make some pretty cool hydraulic bumpers with just a couple of inches ground clearance that flip up for crossing speed bumps etc.
How deep is your sun visor?

Cheers, Ian

PS had the TVR out for a couple of hours today

JP, I graduated from Moira in 1980. I had a red 72 spitfire, a blue 69 TR6, a primer grey 63 VW pickup, and also drove my mothers red 66 mustang convertible.

Cheers,

Ian Thompson

Hi Ian,
Not sure if the move was the best idea if it was for the weather....ah lets see, leave SoCal and go to the frozen tundra of the south!
I have seen the "flip" bumpers, but they will not work on a narrow nose tilt as the bumper supports the outter edge of the front fenders.
The visor is factory polished. I pulled it down to make the bottom line square with the window line. the top still has the factory taper line.
Give my best to your wife and hope you are not ice skating with the Tiv?
