Wanted - "Baby" Elan

I'd really like to find a soft-top Elan 2-seater that doesn't cost a fortune. I don't mind if it needs restoration, as long as it's complete and not a basket case.
Anyone????

(whoops-just realized it's already been sold. But keep checking BaT)

Thanks Nial, I do check BAT, and Craigslist and eBay and and....
This one's maybe more than I want to do - it's also a long way from home to go and check. I really wonder how complete it is.
I shall keep looking and I will find one, I know!

I was moanin' over that car. Had it been within a few hundred miles of me, it'd likely have strained my 20+ year marriage.

...on the third hand, it'd be a great Christmas gift: "His 'n Hers" Elans would have been possible.

I thought you already had two non-running Elans...

With that Spyder frame, the current S-3 would be baby-poo to put back in order. Then repair the cracked one and *PRESTO!* TWO running Elans.

"presto"? Swapping frames on 2.5 Loti? Really? PRESTO?

Sorry - not being a smarty-pants, really. It just made me smile, all the more because it was you, doc..... Scary part is a frame swap is a relaxing Saturday afternoon for you.

18 bolts, some wiring, fuel and hydraulics to disconnect. Four semi-stout lads can lift the shell from the chassis. With a block and tackle rig it can even be a one-man show.

Don't forget: the Elans were basically "kit cars".

Re: Wanted - "Baby" Elan

Swapping out frames really is very easy. Did it to my first Elan and I used the one man show with block and tackle method. The time consuming part is taking extra care to get the new chassis aligned just right and drilling and tapping the chassis. I think I had off and on 3 times during that process just to make sure all was aligned.

Besides Roger there seems to be quite a few people looking for Elans lately on the typical Elan (Lotus) forums.

This one

Hopefully next week. It'll be glad to come to the warm South from the frozen North, I'm sure!

Excellent! I've seen that car on Loony for awhile. Looks like a very nice car.

Nice! Looks to be well done, very like original.

Umm... only issue is the trans seal? I don't really believe it can be done in the car. Tailshaft is surrounded by the backbone, IIRC.

You're gonna love it, Roger. Just keep one eye on the mirrors in traffic.

Congrats!!!

Re: Wanted - "Baby" Elan

There is an access hole in the backbone under the carpet/console, and you can "reach" the tailshaft seal with the driveshaft slid back, but it won't be easy. I did mine when the unit was out of the car, so I cannot say for sure whether it is feasable or not. Evidently Tony has done so before.

When you replace that seal, check the driveshaft yoke for wear. Mine was very worn right at the seal point, and was the reason for my leak.

Original motor? Dellortos certainly are not on this series, but a nice upgrade for sure. I got em on mine.

Re: Wanted - "Baby" Elan

I really don't think it can be done thru the access hole. about all it's good for is lining up the yoke with the output shaft.
