I've just installed a modified steering box cover to the TR3A and what a difference it makes. Mine had just enough wear on the steering gear that I could not get rid of the excess play w/o causing some binding.
The modified part uses a spring-loaded pin in place of the solid adjustment screw so pressure is maintained on the rocker shaft assembly yet there is enough give to eliminate binding. Now I have almost no play in the wheel yet a normal 'rebound' when coming out of a turn.
The part is available from Herman van den Akker handhvan@msn.com for $65 + shipping. Herman will need your old top plate for a core... the replacement is a modified original steering box cover. Looks almost identical to original, the only difference is a 9/16" adjustment screw instead of the original 7/16" as it has to be machined out to accept a spring & plunger.
