The old style boards were made from slate. Nowadays it is chalkboard paint on something like Masonite. Looks like Office Depot carries slate boards. Office Depot

There is also black board paint too create your own custom sized area.

Sorry,I didn't explain myself.I'd like to get one of the
old,heavy ones the schools used.They're perfect for the top of
a workbench.
My Dad offered one to me years ago,but by the time I went
to pick it up,it was given away..... & cut up.

3/4" plate steel. Might need to shore up the legs o the bench though.

I have one in my classroom...I screwed shower liner from home depot over it to make it a white board several years ago. I am not sure it's the old slate kind but it's the original that was put in the room in the 40's or 50's and was beat up. I think the choir teacher beat it with a ruler when he had that room about 10 -15 years ago.

We just gotta figure out how to get it off the wall and out of the room while no one is looking! LOL
