Oh wise Forum members....help sought in how to ship across
country a hard top. First quote is $500...which just about
took the smile off our face! Have a couple days to decide...
but some of you have to have already shipped large things
a long distance. Speak to us...please. Gil

I had a hardtop shipped to me via Greyhound. They put it on the bus, and you have to pick it up at the nearest Greyhound bus station. Not a very big inconvenience to save a lot of $.
They do have size limitations, but mine just fit. They are somewhat flexible on the size too.
Check it out!

I shipped a restored Austin Healey HT for a BN4 from AZ to KS for around $200.00. I did charge the buyer $50.00 for the crate and delivery charge to the terminal. The trick is to get the correct freight rate for the package. Weight is not an issue because the package will be so large. Mine was over 200lbs. I also shipped a TR3 apron from AZ to OH for around $65.00 by Greyhound. Greyhound is the least expensive if the package is the correct size. You will have to deliver and receive the package from the terminal though.

We shipped a GT6 hood from Colorado to Texas for $120 just by using a freight company. Had to pick up and drop off at their linkage, but it got there a day later, and no worse for wear.

About 15 years ago, I shipped a hatch-back door for a small 3-door Honda Civic by truck from Santa Clara Calif. to Montreal by Yellow freight for $350.00. I had to crate it in Calif. before they would accept it and I had to drive 20 miles to the Yellow Freight Depot here to collect it.

Elliot:

I shipped a couple of tires to Seattle via Amtrak for about $60. I had to bring them down to 30th street station in Philly, but it worked out fine. They will take a standard pallet, also.

Frank-
Never really gave the train a thought, but that sounds like a great idea. I will keep that in mind for my next large shipping adventure.
