Wedge tr8 starter installation question

I bought a new starter for my TR8 from TRF. It is shaped differently than the original one and has "made in Japan" on the box. It bolted up without a problem but now the catalytic convertor won't go back on because it hits the starter. Has any one else had this problem? How did you fix it?

When the stock TR8 starter goes bad, most people opt for either the later stock Rover starter or one of the aftermarket starters. Both options are smaller, lighter and are considered gear reduction high torque starters. They work very well, and are almost essential if you opt for a larger displacement or higher compression replacement engine. They will turn over a warm high compression stroker motor with ease. Never heard of the problem you are encountering. I guess it's getting harder to find stock cores to rebuild. Maybe the fact that I have 5 or 6 of them isn't helping the situation. I suggest you return the one you have and look for one of the high torque starters.

Todd, Any chance the one from TRF is suggested to be a Hi Torque variety?
What's the part #
Is it GRS106 by any chance?

What position is the soleniod in? Stock TR8/Rover past 1976 are on the side if looking from the fron about 9 O'Clock position. If you have one where the soleniod is at the 6 O'Clock position then this is a high torque pre 1976 starter for a rover V8. That will most likely hit the starter. Now the Japan thing sounds like you got a mut-starter.

You are correct, the TRF part number is GRS106. I did a little web searching and found a picture of my starter. On this website it is advertised as a Rover part. You can see from the picture how the solenoid created a problem.

Well if I was you I would return it stating the application is incorrect period! Then go on ebay and buy a used high torque rover starter the tiny new ones that go for about $50 to $75 used.

Hey, before you send it back ,I have one of Woody's in my garage and I will compare measurements if you can provide a pic and #'s along side.

:iagree: That's what I have in mine. Smaller, lighter, and not prone to overheating like the originals. Lots of them around.

I should have asked the forum BEFORE installing this one. With a little help from a BIG hammer I was able to customize the catalytic convertor so everything is happy. Thanks for everyone's comments.
