I ordered some new hood hinge gaskets from TRF expecting them to to be rubber, but instead they are some sort of fiber/paper gasket material. The ones I have on the car now are rubber (which were purchased about 15 years ago from TRF).

What gives? Is this gasket material what was originally fitted? Or did I buy the wrong thing? Package calls them "Hinge Packing."

Fiber/Paper is original. Shouda mentioned something Gavin, I have a mess of them here.

Gavin - You can add more packing pieces to raise the hinges slightly to dial in the hood alignment to prevent rubbing at the cowl edge. If you had rubber which is probably thicker than the fiber, be careful to watch the gaps as you close the hood with the new gaskets.

It all depends on how the bonnet (hood) lines up. You want the height of both the hood and the scuttle to be even. You can use more or less on one half of the hinge to line things up if necessary. That also applies left to right. I would imagine that the earlier cars (the ones without the raised plinths) wouldn't have the problem of alignment as much as the later ones, as the raised plinths might be of a slightly different height. Then you would have to adjust.

Mine lined up pretty good using just one shim/fiber all around.

Remember, the hinges are NOT THE SAME. There is a right and a left hinge. They go with the slope of the hood. I just replaced my gaskets last month. The scuttle holes were "fixed," and the little bit of adjustment needed was done with the forward end of the hinge.

Where you can get a good look at the fit is at the two front corners of the hood. Be careful the first time you let down the hood, as you can mess up your paint if the corners "touch" the front fender.
