well I thought I would start a new thread since I am repainting my entire car now. You probably read the hood respray thread so you know the issues I had and created. Well my NOS hood arrived today and its in almost perfect condition a few scratches in the primer and one small dent, but hey after I get all the dents in the pannels done I will be an expert at small dents. I have RR fender and doors left to remove the old paint, using a dewalt grinder with a stainless steel wire wheel and it works well and FYI the total paint thickness on the car now is .040" thick in mills is that 40 ? No offense but body shops unless you watch evey thing they do on a daily basis and put every thing in writting you want done, you will get taken advantage of and thats why I am doing it myself. You would not believe the crap I have uncovered, bondo over paint, paint that came off in sheets due to improper prep. my LR pannel is tack welded to the body because they couldnt find the bolts maybe,,, ok enough well I have pics and will post some shortly.

Hang in there Hondo - there is nothing quite so scary as what you find when the outermost paint comes off. Been there, dealing with it, have the nightmares of "what the heck did I do...."

Just keep plugging away at it.

Production shoddy bop S.O.P. I'm afraid. To get what you ~want~ you must do it yourself or have a really-REALLY good relationship with a quality shop. Either way it ain't cheap to have the level of finish that will look right and last.

The only time one of my cars was turned over to a shop (the guy did all the Porsche repairs for the dealership I worked in) it came back compromised. I'd paid the money "up-front" due to a level of trust in the relationship... this guy lost the Porsche business due to the cut corners but *my* car was never right.

1) Specifically asked he NOT use Bondo on fiberglass. He "mudded" the bonnet.

2) Specifically asked he not mask, rather remove light fixtures. His "helper" CUT every wire an inch or two away from the Lucar connectors.

3) Instead of masking inside holes where the lights lived he oversprayed INTO 'em. Then took a WAG as to which painted wires to twist connect and TAPE together again.

Charlie sent you a message, Brosky and DNK, give me a little break, I have some pics but they are on my other computer running vista and there is no pic resizer on it so I have to transfer them either by email or flash card to my old laptop, but I did get the rear fenders stripped and primed and I purchased a miller 180 auto-set mig welder with an 75/25 argon/co2 bottle and solid core, 023 wire to fix the holes, so I have to practice, but I have the old hood to salvage sheet metal from, I am kind of worried about the outrs sills under the doors I already uncovered some holes

Stay tuned pics commming, I am out of town traveling this week

For what its worth, I've been using VSO Image Resizer on my Vista-ized machine, pretty similar to the XP resizer tool I had.
