TR4/4A Help with front input shaft seal on TR4 tranny.

I was wondering if any of you gentlemen may be able to help me with this problem. I had to get a new front cover, seal and gasket for where the input shaft enters my gearbox through the bell housing, and I'm having some difficulty setting the seal to the base of the housing. I see in the factory manual that there is a special tool for this, but alas, I ain't got one. I've managed to get it about 1/8th of an inch from it's home, but it's so tight I'm afraid to pound on it any further. I was thinking I could use a large socket to push it down with, but all the ones I have are either slightly too small or too large.

Any thoughts?

Are you sure you got ALL of the old seal removed? It shouldn't be particularly tight (about like any other push-in seal), but some people get to this stage

and quit.

Mine tapped right in with just a brass hammer.

It's a brand new housing but it's not made very well. It's lighter than the original and the casting isn't that great. Another quality part from New Deli I suspect.

I'll just keep pounding on it.

you might want to check the seal in case it's wrong. If it's that tight i might want to take a hone and take some metal off the housing. It will be a nighmare if you have to replace the seal later otherwise. Can you measure an old one to compare with the new one? If you are "pounding on it" you will distort the seal and it will be no good anyways, imho
