2004 Discovery Oil Pump Faailure

My Daughter has a 2004 DIscovery that has just broken it's oil pump. The engine appears toast. This car is has 62k on it. We have been told that this is a known problem by L/R, but they wouldn't do anything about it unless the engine failed. Is anyone aware of this? Does anyone have any info on class actions etc? $8k+ to fix this is a lot of money if the factory were aware of the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a diagnostic tsb for symptom resolution. LR, as far as I know, only steps up to the plate if a failure occurs. Seems some front covers were improperly machined where they do not mate up to the front of the engine.SO the pump is not turning completely parallel to the crank and front of the engine. Wipes out the rotors of the pump after many miles. If she ever took it to a LR dealer complaining of engine noise, ticking, or oil light coming on, before the warranty expired you have warranty leverage. If not.....

So it is not a product recall, but you might contact NHTSA and see what they say..

We have 3 rover blocks fail because of this same oiling issue in TR8s. It turns out the front cover for the 4.0/4.6 litres does not have locating pins as the older and revised new covers do. This means it is a 50-50 chance of getting the pump aligned right. If your off a tad bit it prolongs failure. In our cases we were off enough to kill an engine in about 4 to 5k miles. LR really has not fessed up to this but in the early days of a LR under warrenty they would fix it by getting a new engine and dumping it in. We have about 20 complete long blocks that all have the timing covers on them in UNKNOWN condition but were replaced as warrenty items. I would suspect that is the cause/reason. Good luck!
