Motor or Anchor?

Pulled the motor on the TR3 on Sat and with my uncle's help took it apart on Monday.

It looks worse than I thought when I got the car and I thought it was bad then (sat out for 25yrs without a valve cover and no oil)! The machine shop and my uncle (40yr mechanic) say it can be rebuilt. I'll know more after the weekend. Wish me luck. They don't grow TR3a motors on trees and if they did, they would be a pain to pick as they are heavy lumps

I've never seen a crank rusted completely away like that! Sorry couldn't resist

I'll be interested to know if you can rehab the cam, I have a similar donor from a TR4a that rested for many years - but it had a cover and some oil so isn't quite the same.

Suspect the cam can be reground.

Keep us informed Paul, Good luck, Tinkerman

You'd be amazed how good parts can look after 10 hours in an acid tank.

Take a look at these pictures of my block, before and after:

Ohhh, a transparent invisicrank! Those are rare!

In all sincerity, that engine doesn't look that bad. As mentioned, some time in a tank makes things look much better. Machined surfaces can be reground, and bearings in reground sized obtained.

Update
Well it is only 1/2 a TR3a anchor :cryin: The crank has been ground down from std to .020. It will need a new cam shaft as it has some broken teeth. He has 7 sitting on the shelf that he can use. But the worst part and unexpected it will need a new cylinder head! Many cracks near and around the valve guides on the top of the head (the bottom looks fine). Anyone have one laying around. Pictures later, I think I need a :cryin: :thirsty:

Don't have the parts, but I'll join ya for that drink. Hey, look on the
bright side....

Uhhh, is there a bright side......

Oh, yeah, the crank was salvgable. Cool.

And, oh, yeah, you probably woulda wanted a new cam anyway...good excuse.
Wouldn't a little lob to the idle be kinda cool??

A lob is nice. I've got to stop in sometime and see your TR. Any luck with the speedo yet.

Naw, Paul, the saga continues. Can't believe it. Build the engine, then
hang up on the darned overdrive/speedometer. It's so ridiculous it's
funny.

Parts that are supposed to fit and work are coming from New Zealand, as
I type this message.

I really can't tweak the timing and carbs until I can run the thing without
throwing oil everywhere..... so, here I sit.

You are right, actually, Paul. We are family BCF'ers and rather close
neighbors as well. Any time you want to have a cup of coffee or something...
or that drink I mentioned... just PM me.

It is home! Since the weather was good I did a little painting. Finding a new head and getting time to pick it up has been time consuming. At least it is not an anchor.

I'm right down the road too. We should meet up in Los Banos at the doughnut shop.

We all should try to meet up. I just got my info in the mail for the Britsh car show in Woodland (old Dixon show) in May. Will any of you be attending?
