My sons 1st. Classic Car: `87 Alfa-Romeo Milano

Hi Folks,

I just bought my oldest son Scott (31yrs. old); I guess that kind of gives away my age bracket; a Super Sweet `87 Alfa-Romeo Milano. His 1st. "Classic".

She`s a 2 owner car. I got her from a friend of mine who is an Alfa "Duetto" car nut. She sports 103K Orig.mi. 5 speed coupled to a 2.5L twin overhead cam V6. She`s totally Orig. & everything works as it should. She`s been in a heated garage all her life so her paint has held up extremely well. No rust, No nothing, Just is one fine driving automobile.

My son never was into cars but he surely is having a change of heart now!

Will he be a "Car Guy"? I hope so!!

Russ

Russ, I have a set of 2.5L heads (bare) here for it if you want to "think ahead". Keep that timing belt changed at proper intervals if you DON'T want to have spares on-hand.

Hmmm... A Duetto guy in PA? I know one of those. He's got a winter place down here. WITH his original dark blue Duetto in the garage.

Hi Doc,

What you are asking me is; Do I just want the heads or do you want to sell the heads?

My friend lives in Snydersville, PA. Not the same person your thinking of. Where does the person your referring to live?

Russ

PS: Doc, Why not send me a pic of the Alfa GT. I`m curious to see what she looks like. Thanx in advance.

PPS: Doc, I`m looking for "1/18th Diecasts" of a `61 Giulietta, `67 Duetto & `87 Milano. Would you have any or know where I can possibly get some?

There are European companies making diecast models of these cars, saw a few when I was in Belgium a couple of years ago. Can't think of the manufacturers' names, but can picture the models still.

Sorry for the late response, Russ. We've had a rash of computer failures here and are in "damage control" mode lately.

I have a set of 2.5L V6 heads, bare. Yes I want to sell them. They're from a conversion to 3.0L heads... Customer's car (many moons ago), "balance due", long story.

The Duetto resides south of here, in the Naples area. Owned by a friend who was both the original owner and now the fourth (if I recall the story correctly). He campaigned a Duetto in SCCA E-P for a number of years, too.

My point was that the V6 engine will self destruct its upper bits if that belt is left unattended for too long. I had a collection of bent exhaust pushrods, beat-to-pulp pistons, valves and assorted other expensive Alfa bits lyin' about as "pointie-talkie" example for the doubters.

Sounds like your pal has plenty of Alfa ownership/experience and will know about the belt/tensioner issues, tho.

I know one too. He's got (or had) a barnfull of LBC parts. Healey blocks, heads, TC stuff, sidecurtain sets. More B parts than I can remember. Loads of NOS stuff. I think he bought the Bennett organization's inventory when they exited the LBC franchise in the late 70s. He ran an indy repair shop.

He told me to make an offer a few years ago; sent me a spreadsheet that I can no longer find :frown: I literally had no room to store the stuff or I would have jumped on it.

He retired recently and I think he's listing it on eBay. Should have bought it...

Hi Scott,

Not the same person I know. He is 110% Alfa but with a similar scenario:

Duetto parts all over the freakin place! Now will be posting on ebay himself. I just put a few "Drips and Drabs" on there myself:

Doc, I`m not certain if the post above is "Before or After" the PM you sent me?

But; I`m waiting for your reply. You had said you were going to check out the heads.

Thanx,

Russ

PS: My son had a "Chrysler Cirrus": Same story! The belt tensior went or the belt went 1st (?); But bent pushrods etc etc. Not worth fixing! Sold the car back to the mech. for $300.00 (It was rusting out at the sills anyway)!!

Is this the model being talked about? The Milano.
Milano_1.gif

Or this one? The Duetto.

Re: My sons 1st. Classic Car: `87 Alfa-Romeo Milan

Hi Russ, Looking at a photo of the Milano, it seems it was a fairly expensive car in 87. Just under $19,000.00.
Also, I think there was a recall in 1988 on all models of the 87 Milano for a possible defective headlight switch. Something about the momentary switch on the stalk could cause loss of the headlights while driving. Maybe you ought to look into this. Just a suggestion. Hopefully it's already been done.

Another "bit" in th' shed... a few of the headlight column switches in question. They were notorious.

Re: My sons 1st. Classic Car: `87 Alfa-Romeo Milan

Hi Paul,

I watched a You Tube Video by "Motorweek" testing the Milano 3.0:

They were selling for just under $23K!! Expensive little bugger then.

Thanx for the hds. up on the headlight switch but mine is just fine.

Hey Doc, Would you by an chance happen to have a "HEATER BOX" for the `87 Milano 2.5L? Please let me know.

Thanx, Russ
