Gentlemen:

In the Fall edition of Moss' British Motoring they mention a "must do" upgrade of a crankshaft oil conversion kit. Since I am going to put a 1275 in my BE, is this something that you would recommend? Has anyone tried it? Do you know the Moss part number?

Let me know,

Mike Pennell

Mike,

It appears Mr Dodd (in the fall edition you mention) is referring to Moss' rear crankshaft oil seal conversion kit. The one for the 1275 is part number 297-655. And it lists for $299.95.

Try this link and it should take right to it.
Moss Rear Oil Seal Conversion Kit

With all that said, I've no personal experience with these kits or others of the same purported function. The general feeling amongst many enthusiasts is they leak, and tend to mask the reason for the leak, e.g, high crankcase pressures caused by things like blow-by past worn rings. Many folks have recommended spending the time and money to correct the real problem and when that is done, the factory oil scroll is perfectly satisfactory.

I'm sure you'll get several other responses. Wait til Hap gets on here. He ought to give you an earful! Your turn Hap! :hammer:

Does this car have a 5-speed?

I personally do not like how the rear crankshaft seal is designed. Some people claim that it works great, but I'd be willing to bet that there are nearly as many people that say it was a waste of time.

Trevor:
Do you have to use the rear seal provided with the Rivergate kit? Or, can you still use the original scroll? I had the main bearing seats/caps line bored with the scroll so I want to use that and not the Rivergate seal.
Thanks!

My original scroll seal is in place, and the rivergate oil seal is fitted in a plate that sets into the alloy backplate. (If I remember correctly).
