Replacing the windshield seal

I need to replace the windshield seal and didn't find anything about this on the site. Has anyone done this and can you tell me what are the tricks. Also has anyone replaced the seal between the frame of the windscreen and frame of the car on a gt6? It looks like that is bad as well. Thank you for all the help. Tom

It's the 'old rope around the seal method'.
I struggled replacing my original screen. I had a new seal, a new chrome filler strip and a very experienced 'helper' this did not stop the end result from being a cracked windshield, we had it perfectly seated until with 4" to go when the shield cracked. I priced a TRF shield, $250, then went to a local windshield fitting company, they charged $190 fitted. They got the cracked unit out in 10 seconds and the new one fitted in 15 minutes, well worth letting the experts do the job and take the responsibility.

Tom, I'm preparing to do the same thing, only with the windscreen frame removed as I'm stripping the car for a new paint job this weekend.

I'm told there are two bolts at each corner of the windscreen that secure it to the top, and three bolts on the bottom that hold the windscreen to the scuttle. Of course, the frontmost part of the headliner must be removed, or peeled back, to gain access to the top bolts.

I also have to remove my dash top, which should be easier after the bottom windscreen-to-scuttle bolts are removed.

It's usually a good idea to be prepared to perform some rust abatement and painting around the windscreen frame area. This area is a haven for rust and often requires attention.

I wish you good luck, I'm sure I'm going to need it, too!

I've done this acouple times now and never had a problem. I just followed the procedures in the Haynes manual. Maybe I just got lucky.

I pulled the windscreen when I rehabbed the interior of the TR4. Dropped it off at an auto glass place with new rubber & chrome trim. They removed the old glass and reinstalled with the new bits for about 40 bucks.

The rope thing may work pretty slick for getting a windscreen in with the old rubber gasket -- but the new gasket & trim can be a bear for the first-time installer. Made $40 look cheap.

Yes, I agree with Geo. My GT6 has the crome surround strips on both front and rear seals and there's no easy way to install it.

I'm letting a professional windshield person do it. That way, if they break the glass I won't have to pay for it!
