Alloy Valve Cover Install Issue

I'm installing an after market alloy valve cover on my 4A. With the stock valve cover gasket attached to the new valve cover, the replacement valve cover studs that were included to are not long enough to permit the use of the stock valve cover gasket. With no gasket it will work. I could not find any reference to this problem in the archives, so this is a heads up for anyone installing a replacement cover.

Seems like I have 3 options, especially since I've had the cover for a couple of years and don't remember if the source was TRF or Moss.

1) Use RTV Silicon or Hylamar without any gasket 2) Get longer studs, 3) Make a new gasket out of thin gasket material and install in the normal manner.

The path of least resistance at the moment is just to use a gasket maker/flange sealant. Would Hylamar work without a gasket? RTV silicone should work, has anyone tried this without a cork gasket. I have Hylamar and both blue and black RTV gasket maker in the shop.

If I made a gasket what type of material should I get from my FLAPS.

I made longer studs and used the cork gasket. It seemed worth the trouble to me -- and it really wasn't that much trouble...

I don't think that you want a solid seal out of Hylomar. Maybe Permatex Silicone RTV or the like, but not Hylomar. You may have real issues getting it off without bending the heck out of it if you go that route.

I'd go with longer studs and cork if it were mine.
