Okay, Okay, I know, it's a bonnet. Anyway, a few photos.
The black stuff under the hood, there hasn't been glued
yet. Gotta get the right stuff...heat, etc. Let the paint
dry. So here goes......

I used paint in a spray can. I would not do it that way
again, though. Too much paint/effort. It is easier than
getting out the compressor; filling the gun; cleanup, mixing,
etc....nonetheless, I think I'll go compressor and gun the
next time, if there were to be a next time.

You can buy a paint gun for only 150 to $200 or so as a starter.
Then you'll need a compressor; hose. It's really about just
doing it, you know, the experience thing.

Staying stock color is not difficult using color paint codes.
I did my car in pieces; i.e., trunk deck; bonnet; then front
and rear panels. Paint is also not so bad a price when you put
the cost of pros paint jobs on balance.

I say, get a gun and go for it.

after hard work and I think I can speak for the lot of
us....especially coming from another LBC owner.

I've been thinking about getting the hood insulator package myself. Where did you get yours? Does it have the Triumph or TR6 logo?

I popped in quickly, Paul, and will return next time with the connection for the
insulator. You know, I purchased the package that was a little more money that included
the logo. I think I won't use the logo, because you must install with a shiny more
finished side showing in order to stick the logo on that face. If you go no logo, then
you can have the rough textured finish showing, which is what is shown in these pictures.

If you order the same less expensive package and want the logo, I'm happy to mail
the logo I got to you. The wife voted no logo and as I was thinking the same way,
decided not to intall it. It's red. Probably would look great under your yellow
hood: Yellow, black and red....yeah!

Well, Don, not being the expert, my first gun was a Devilbiss. I think it's
a name that is well respected in the paint community. Most sold now are
HVLP..high volume, low pressure guns and is recommended.

I bought mine at the first paint shop I found selling auto paint; but, later
was suprised to find some great deals on line. For instance, I found a
set of guns, HVLP, one larger (for shooting the car in general) and one
smaller detail gun, maybe more appropriate for door jams and the like, and
was blown away to see a price of $150 for both in a nice little plastic
carrying case.....Tinster, you can add this one to your trunk tools and
carry it nicely....

My son bought a book that helped me to the extent it showed spray patterns
to be acheived. This will tell you if and when you've acheived the proper
air/pressure/material mixes before you shoot.

I say go for it....it is work but very rewarding....and if you get a scratch
or ding, you can fix it yourself.

I have used DeVilbiss Finishline HVLP for primer and solid colors with pretty good results (about $130). I also have a DeVilbiss Plus gun (higher pressure but compliant with reg's - about $300) for metallics and pearls (the HVLP doesn't give as good atomization so it isn't as good for metallics or pearls). A less expensive no-name brand HVLP (maybe $100) is probably Ok for primer and maybe for solid colors, too. I don't think you can get even the bottom of the line Sata for less than about $450 but they are supposed to be really good.

The HVLP guns use a lot of air, so make sure your compressor is up to the job. Also, make sure you have a good oil and water filter and a good regulator.

Different paints take different nozzles. Primers and primer filter use large openings (1.4-1.6 mm) then finish guns (0.8-1.2mm). These numbers are for the conventional guns I use. Get a cheap gun for primers and put the rest into a better gun for finish work.

Also, the gravity feed guns (pot on top) cannot be used to spray overhead. If you are going to spray overhead, you will need a siphon gun (pot of bottom).

I have found the hardest work is in the surface preparation. Do not underestimate the effort to get a smooth foundation. The hardest part for me in spraying is to get a just wet enough surface to allow a good flow of the paint, without sags or runs.

You will also need a clean, well ventilated area in which to paint, with the proper respirators or positive pressure clean air supply mask.

Painting is a very rewarding experience.

For amateur painters, of which I definitely am a member, I think the Vaper brand guns work fine. About $50 at Northern tool if I have that right. Never tested on large panel sprays, but for small stuff I'm really pleased. HVLP has made it easier, in my opinion, than the with the older guns. I still have a conventional and very costly Devilbiss I used about 20 years ago, but with the HVLP guns I think it will go straight to the museum.

Some of the gravity feed guns (like my DeVilbiss Plus gun) have plastic baggie liners for the cups. These seal up after you put in the paint and you can then spray at any angle. The liners also help make cleanup a little easier.

An update on the hood insulater. I glued mine onto the hood this weekend
and my experience was that as I glued the thing into place, it had a
slight tendency to stretch. So on loose lay, it may fit right into place,
but upon gluing, I pushed bottom to top and got a bit of extra material
at the top that I had to trim. Could have allowed for this and not
trimmed had I been aware of the stretch issue.
