I'd fit a Bosch or Delco and then quit worrying about it.
My car came originally with a Delco, and when it finally quit about a year and a half ago, it took $35 to have it rebuilt at a local Delco rebuilder. My super duper 18CR from Moss or Victoria (can't remember which) lasted a month.

Check your wiring (5 or 3?) at the alternator first. Very simple install.

An 18ACR can produce more amps than a 16ACR; that's probably the reason the 18ACR is recommended.
I don't agree with swaping out a Lucas alternator for a Bosch unit unless you want an even more powerful alternator. The Lucas unit in my 80 Spitfire has been there a very long time and has been very reliable. Sure it will quite someday but it is 20-some yrs old. I had the Lucas 16ACR unit in my 73 MGBGT rebuilt 5 years ago and has been reliable ever since.

I think what it all boils down to is most re-built alt's need to be looked at VERY closely before you put them in.Most come with loose or missing parts that will cause it to fail far too soon to suit most drivers. The last ARC18 that failed me had only the prior nitwit to blame.A loose screw inside the unit quickly did it in when it got to bouncing about.....
