I cant locate the thread that was on here recently about the quality of aftermarket wheel bearings....seems to me there was some doubt about the quality of bearings offered by the big 3. Is it better to go to a bearing supply house and get them cross referenced? Also ...when a used bearing has been cleaned with solvent and spun to check for wear:if it spins smoothly it should still be good, right?...if it runs rough its no good. Should it be silent when spun other than the normal metallic noise they make? Karl

Wheel bearings that look and sound good are good. I have replaced very few of them, over the years. The ones in my '59 may even be original! They say "Timkin made in England" on them. I've repacked 'em a couple of times. After I clean 'em out, there's no discoloration (bluing) or scoring, so I pack 'em up and put 'em back in. If you don't let them run dry, or contaminate them with grit, they're pretty robust.
