Sunbeam Arrow?

I have a 1970 Alpine fast back coupe. This is the import model. It has the 1725 slanted for the sloped hood. It was a nice 4 place car. Mine needs a total rebuild. The Arrow name came back in the early 70s as the Plymouth Arrow. The basic 1725 was the engine. Nice little fast back. I used the roof from this model to make the roof for my Lister.

I like those. From something I posted to another forum:

"I guess about 1976 or 1977, a friend had a 1968 Sunbeam Alpine coupe (looked like a Datsun B210, sorta) that he finally got to start one Sunday. He wanted to go for a drive in it immediately. No air cleaner. "

"Everything was closed on sundays, just about, in those days. Walking back towards his house, we ducked into the local supermarket, which was open, probably for snacks. I looked down the aisle-fragment that supermarkets have for automotive stuff. Surprisingly, they had a couple of air filter elements in popular sizes. No Sunbeam applications listed, though. I had an idea, however; I grabbed a filter and a tube of Permatex. Then, I went over to the baking supplies aisle, and picked up two Mirro pie pans, about eight inches in diameter."

"We went back to his house, where the Alpine still sat. I found one bolt (there should have been two) of more or less the correct thread to go into the side-draft carburator, and punched holes into the pie pans to fit, plus a bigger one the size of the carb's throat. Adding a generous coating of Permatex to all parts, we sandwiched the filter element between the two pie pans, and secured the whole assemblage as well as could be expected with the single bolt."

"Not only did it work, but the last time I ever saw the car, much later, the Mirro Racing air cleaner was still in place."

Ah... the forgotten Sunbeams. I went to look at one near Calgary a couple of years back. The guy was annoyed because everyone kept calling thinking it was the roadster he had. And a friend of mine not far from me has a rotten Alpine fastback - there is nothing left of it!

As for the Arrow sedan I would love to track one down. It's on my shortlist of British sedans that I would be interested in purchasing. But there aren't many that come up for sale.

Isn't amazing the things we can come up with. Who would think of going in the kichen to find stuff to make an air cleaner.I know I have made a couple of tools or attachments for a tool to do some of the wierd things I have done.
