I recently purchased a disassembled Mini along with two engines, four gear boxes and a host of other parts. Sorting the parts reveals that the most complete of the engines is the original 997. Is the original engine a good choice or should I look for a 1275? Thanks. Jim B.

I'd go with the 1275, just for the extra power. It really depends on what you wanna do with it.
Personally, I want a supercharged 1275.

Depending on the condition of the 997 and your plans for the car, you may save money by using what you have. If your parts are worn or broken, they'll have to be replaced, but I'd think that would be cheaper than getting a brand new 1275.

I went for a 1275 in mine. I've driven 850s - slow! and 998s - not bad. If I'm not mistaken, the 997 is fairly rare these days. If that's what you have, it may be worth keeping.

I'll post your question on .Mini Mania message board and direct folks back here to answer. I know Basil's trying to reach 1500 members before Christmas.

997 is a rare beastie and is THE one to go for for ultimate power. How do you get round the smog factor though as by the time you have got a big valve head on it a Wiiiiild cam and twin Webers it wont idle below 1500 rpm and it wont run on all 4 till 3500! Think of the hydrocarbons!!
