BMW
To meet demand for popular new Mini, BMW to run Oxford, England, plant 100
hours per week
BMW has announced it will add a third shift to its Oxford, England, assembly
plant that builds the popular new Mini. The Mini went on sale in September
and sold more than 7200 in the first month. With the new shift, which will
be a permanent weekend shift, the plant will be able to operate more than
100 hours per week and produce 500 Minis per day, with an eventual goal of
producing 150,000 to 180,000 Minis per year. The original plan was to
produce 30,000 Minis this year and 100,000 next year.

I saw this car in person last year..the attention to details was enticing..when it hits our shores I highly recommend you take a trip to the dealer...

They did amazing detail work on this car..

Stunning is the word that comes to mind.

Seems buyers agree...

Do you?

George, the first deliveries will be in March of 2002.

I was in London last week and stopped by the BMW/Mini dealer on Park Lane. The shoe room was full of people actually purchasing the vehicle. One drove out while I was there and two more people were asking to buy. The sales rep even commented to me as to how much he loved his job... This may be a sign of whats to come in March with the new Mini launches here.

Unfortunately, no pictures... I just bought a few trinkets and got a test drive before they figured I wasn't a buyer.

Can you give us insight to your test drive?

Would you recommend this car? and if so...for who?

It was a lot of fun to drive. The rep did most of the driving because he was a bit nervous letting the "yank" loose downtown. I did get to take it for a few blocks. For my part, I was just trying to remember to stay to the left and go around roundabouts to the left instead of the right.

The car ran great, shifted smoothly and handled well in turns. It was a bit cramped inside and felt a bit smaller than the old mini's. This may just have been my perception.

Overall, I was very impressed by the vehicle and want to get one of the cooper S's when they come out here.

Are you waiting for the supercharged version? or the hot naturally aspirated S?

I love the detail work they've done throughout the car...very sharp..

Good luck!

I'm going to wait for the supercharged version. I currently own a 2000 year model. One of the last built by Rover. Assuming I can find a buyer, I'll pick up one of the new ones.

The advert is posted. I just need to post the picture.

I just took one this evening of the mini with a Christmas tree tied to the roof. We bought a 14 foot tree, lashed it to the roof of the mini, and nearly went airborn at 45 MPH (or so it felt)

Personally I use a MGB -64, but I will probably be forgiven crawling around the Mini pages.
At least after all these nice pictures.
