    Failed Thermostat pics

    Cont. of my other thread.
I've replaced the original smiths sleeved Tstat with a 180 degree Robertshaw (Prestone) like the one Randall ID'd in his photo. Checker auto carries them under the prestone name and they are listed for 1963 Tr's in the computer.

The original Tstat does work in a jar of hot water, opens-closes but..

If you look at the top hat in the picture where the center rod is blocked by the side piece you'll note it is off center.
The other pic shows the sleeve portion where it is shiny and obviously hanging up in the Tstat housing in the open position.
Explains why sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't and had me looking at everything in the cooling system until it finally hung up for good.

Hmmmm, just one more thing to worry about: works fine
in the hot water/pan test, but fails by fouling on the sides...

    Thanks for the interesting investigation...

    Kevin,
No telling how old the unit is as it came in the car so I suspect it just wore out, wouldn't worry about it but something to be aware of if your temp fluctuates between normal operation and hard to warm up/abnormal op.
