paint frustration

Well tis my first paint job and I was all gun hoe, but today is a bad day! The primer I had in mind was spraying like bird dung so I drove as fast as I could to get some epoxy ppg before they closed. It was gorgeous this morning but now got colder and windy so day is not cooperating. Lots of orange peel. The primer is non sanding so I could wait a few days and straighten it out but the spay booth will have to come down again go up again and it may just get colder as it generally does this time of year. Well they call for an hour min to topcaot with 2 coats. I'm gonna push it to two maybe lay three coats of paint and wet sand out as much as I can another day. Just a bit frustrated. My first protection coat of primer I laid on a 78 degree dry still day and it flowed like magic. I guess this is why the good paint jobs cost so much... nevertheless I need to keep in mind it is a race car and perfection really doesn't matter. Hey it does look a million times better than the day I brought it home. Maybe Ill go drink a beer watch some paint dry and keep telling myself that! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

well came out no better than expected at this point. The way I see it, the worst is over. Now Ill ignore it for a week and wet sand/ polish it out. Got some real "funky" looking things going on. I figure at least I can get the car put back together over the winter and if the paint doesn't grow on me by spring than I can redo just the exterior. The interior and eng. look good enough. Here's a few pics. I suppose it really would have looked good if I had stuck with a solid non-metalliac.

Looks pretty good to me, Scott...I mean, gee, at 100 mph and 20 feet, it'll look great!

lol. Was just way to cold today. I dunno, Under closer inspection, I may knock it all down with some 320 and pray I get a warm sunny weekend in a week or so. Its a shame cause I know if I had gotten this done a month ago I'd be buffing it right now, but we'll see I suppose

I am about to do my first paint job to. Can you post a list of what you used and the settings on you gun etc...

Actually I did a bit of searching on the internet last night and found that according to my outcome the atomization was no good. "bb's" were too large which applies too much solvent and causes the paint to shrink as it dries creating what looks like Orange peel. I'm sure the cold doesnt help. Maybe I'll try to ventalate and heat the garage next week with a couple of oil raditors. Hmmm. Dunno.

Greg I used ppg epoxy primer (2 Coats) Came out perfect, did all the body work and than layed down one more wet coat. Slapped two coats single stage urethane. Using a Devilbiss startingline HVLP gun. 1.8 tip on the primer. 1.3 tip on the paint. Primer setting seem to be good. Paint I need some work on. Ill let you know if I can get it right. Look over in the Spridget forum for Regularmann. Just put a great looking job on a Spridget.

actually that was a thought but when I looked closer there seems to be a few really thin spots that have very small pinholes. The metalliac urethane is not rcommended to be wetsanded as it claims this will actually dull the finish. I ordered a clear designed to go atop the single stage. I took the important panels smooth with 320 and scuff the rest of the car. I spent most of the night re-designing my spray booth so I can run heat into it and Im running several oil filled radiators now. I hope to bring the temp up the 78 by tommorow so I cant spray while it cools down. (Ventilation) It seems to be working. One more shot and thats it. I hope. I brought all the fenders hood etc inside the house just to get them out of the way. They dont look to bad even. If it wasn't for a few pinholes I may have left it. Tommorows round two. Wish me luck!

I 1200 wet color sanded and buffed this car after I painted it. It is base/clear coat.
