Pictures from the Bridge

For all those folks out there that remember the Bridge, I thought I'd snap some pics of what is left. Sad to say, but it will never be back.

Those pics make me sad. That was a great track. I loved that long front straight. Last time I saw Bridgehampton was the weekend before that plane blew up over Long Island Sound. We did a COM event in the remnants of a hurricane, and yes, we were camping at the track. The tarmac doesn't look right without all of the squashed turtle carcasses laying around. Oh well, I can only hope the turtles and other critters like the golf course better than the race course.

funny you mention the turtles. i almost took one out on the way in. It is sad that Long Island needed to replace the only Race circuit with one of 125 other golf courses. Just doesnt seem right. The long straight away is the only part left. Just seems wrong to throw all that history away for a million dollar membership

I was out there last year for a last look with a friend who raced there with me and almost cried. Security chased us out but not before I secured a small peice of the track that had been torn up.It resides in my shop as a reminder of a place that holds a lot of memories for me and my family

Donn:

I am very familar with Bell Labs. A lot of the guys I work with have come to work at our college as a second career after working in Bell Labs/Murray Hill.

And as far as the transitor...here's a good one:

My office mate, Dom (in his late 70s now), was a lab technical for Bardeen, Brattain, and Shockley when they built the first transistor. After they hand-built the first versions, they ordered a small production-run (about 200) of the first transisors (to test). For some reason Dom kept a bunch of those very first production transistors and he gave me one. I have one on my desk right now. It's a cool artifact if you're a geek like me.
Dom also confirmed what a lot of other folks have said about Shockley: he wasn't a very nice guy.

Only raced the bridge once, back in '80..

It was a really fast fun track...but even then, My major concern was don't fall off the tarmac...its rough riding out there..

Living south of Boston, we took the ferry back to New London...
that trip was a real racers booze cruise.. good thing CT. Staties were not waiting for us on the docks....

and like a previous post.. just how many golf courses do we really need... and they're even more environmentally unfriendly than a race track...(Just look at the water wasteage in Phoenix...never mind Long Island keeping them green!!!)

Last time I was at Brideghampton was around 1969 or 70 to watch a CanAm race. I think the Jim Hall Chaparall and the Pensky Sunoco driven by Mark Donohugh were there. Only the second race I ever went to. Haven't been back to one until two years ago for the Monterey Historic at Laguna Seca. I appreciate the cars more now.
