Engine rebuild books

Figured this would be the best forum to ask...

Anyone have experience with rebuilding motors and can suggest good reference books? I found the following book at Amazon which sounds good:

The Step-By-Step Guide to Engine Blueprinting: Practical Methods for Racing and Rebuilding by Rick Voegelin

John,

I take it you have a good copy of the factory manual. But if not, you need to get one. I have a Chiltons manual for MG's which has an engine and engine rebuilding section. I found it very useful. Maybe they have one for Healeys. This not to say that the book you found is not an excellent reference source. But you might want to add something British to your library.

Hi Scott,

I have the Factory workshop manual and a Haynes manual. Both have an engine rebuilding section .. priceless for the specific Healey motor info but I'm looking for more theory, detail and hand holding to do this job right. Can't have too many books, eh

John,

You might want to spend some time at a large book shop (Barnes & Noble comes to mind) and look though their books. I'm not familiar with the one you mentioned (The Step-By-Step Guide to Engine Blueprinting: Practical Methods for Racing and Rebuilding by Rick Voegelin), but they are usually how to work on a Chevy V-8. You'll learn more by talking to a good machine shop and reading your Haynes manual. For getting more power out of your Healey, the following are recommended:

- Going to vintage races and talking with a Healey racer.

- There is a book "Vintage Racing British Sports Cars" that's out of print, but can be found on in the out-of-print sections of the major web booksellers. This will give you some ideas.

- Check with some of the Healey racers on the web: Team Healey Texas, Cape International (UK) and Denis Welch (UK). Most of my engine mods are as a result of talking with Denis Welch. Denis supplied major parts to the fastest of the Austin-engined Healeys at Tahoe. We couldn't top the Nasty Boys, but I'ld rather sound like a Healey.

Hello John,
Blueprinting, whilst being very interesting, is much more than you will need for a general engine rebuild. It involves a lot of time in measuring and weighing all the components then machining to make everything as identical as posible and ensure that all the tolerances are as fine as possible. Expensive and poor value for money except for serious racers.
Have you thought of looking for a text book as used by automotive technicians?
Another thought, find a scrap engine and take it to bits then re-assemble to familiarise yourself with how things work, and where you find certain operations difficult.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did order the blueprint book along with another general overhaul guide. My intention is to rebuild with motor with an eye towards performance but don't want to hinder normal street driving. The motor already has a roller rocker arm assembly and tubular header exhaust. The BJ8 cam profile, lighter flywheel and BJ8 carbs should add some more Hp and quicker response.
John Turney, what mod's have you made?
