Timing gear on camshaft sprocket question

I'm putting a double-chain adjustable timing set onto my 1275. The sprocket on the cam fits on nicely and cam endfloat is fine.

Trying to put the gear onto the cam shaft and having a hard time, seems like its just to tight. I remember pulling off the original one and that wasn't easy either - took some screwdrivers and leveraginga little bit at a time till it came off.

Any hints/tips of getting the gear on? Would a few taps with a rubber mallet hurt anything?

The timing gear is a snug fit. I must admit that I cheat a bit and run some wet/dry paper around the bore of the pulley (especially around the keyway) before trying to fit them... just in case there are any burrs.

Welll, after trying for about 1/2 hour I measured the crank and the bore of the gear---The gear's bore is to small, by about 2 thousandth. Only way that's going to fit
is after a trip to the machine shop.

In my spare box of parts I had a crank timing gear in good shape so used that. The adjustable cam timing gear is a wondererful thing.

Just emailed Swiftune in the UK. Right now I've got an expensive paperweight.

Thanks for the help.

Swiftune? SW5?

I don't wish to suggest anything negative about Swiftune, but you may find you need to telephone them. When I bought my SW5 I had several questions and my emails went unanswered.

Sorry about the clearance issue. However, I think you'll like the Swiftune cam... assuming it's the SW5.

Yup the SW5. I've had good luck with emailing them, fast replies. I wondering what, if anything they'll do for me on this problem.

I'm glad you've had good email success with them. Admittedly, my contact with them was over 4 years ago. A lot changes in 4 years.

Is it their timing gear as well as their cam? If so, I'd like to think they'd replace one or the other... or perhaps they have a partner in the U.S. who they'd authorize to bore the pulley out for you. The one who comes to mind is Seven Enterprises. They now distribute Swiftune products and they have a machine shop.

You'll like the cam. I found it gives nice low end torque with lots of pull up through the range I use my engine.

Hello Bruce,

how did you measure the bore of the camwheel, bores are tricky to read accurately.

If it is 2 thou too small, then perhaps warming the wheel would get it on but make it very tight to remove. I'd put a tight wheel into a pan of oil on the stove to warm it, by the way.

Alec

P.S., removing 2 thou also needs a good machinist, you are talking about removing one thou off the inner face.

Alec,

I just did the best I could with a micrometer. If I do go to a machine shop, I'll bring the gear that fits and tell him to bore out the one that doesn't fit so its the same size.

This way he can do the measuring that's needed.

thanks........
