    69 TR6 gas tank/emissions

    I own a 69 TR6. I don't know if I should be starting a new post, but I am confused by a number of discusssions concerning emission equipment and venting of the gas tank. I currently have a strong gas smell in my trunk. I received a number of ideas from my last post on how to find the source of the gas leak in my car, but I admit I am as confused as ever at this point from some of the information. I completely took out everything in the trunk. I can see no evidence of fuel leaking at the filler neck, the line on the bottom going to the carburetors, nor the sending unit hole. I can find no vent tube that has been discussed that leads up to a carbon canister near the front of the car. Moss also shows no evidence of a carbon canister for a 69. Did a 69 have the carbon canister originally? Is there a vent tube on a 69 gas tank, and if so, what is the original pathway? I plan on pulling out the panel on the inside of the car and completely pulling the gas tank this weekend. Any help concerning a 69 would greatly be appreciated.

    The vent tube is located on the top front half of the tank.
    You will have to remove the interior panel to access it.
    I don't have any literature that is exclusive to you car.
    My old '74 and my '72 had the line running up the left inside frame rail, parallel with the fuel line, onto the cross member and up to the canister that is bracketed at the right side radiator mount. Tubes from the canister then feed into the carbs.

    ISTR that the carbon cannisters and overall evaporative emissions did not come along until the 1970 model year; at least that was the case with Spitfire and GT6. Before 1970, those cars had vented filler caps. Perhaps your '69 TR6 also did not have the evap. controls originally, but someone has put a later, nonvented filler cap on the car? Or some other vent is plugged?

    Sorry to be guessing, since I'm not as familiar with the early TR6 as I am with the small Triumphs!

    As Andrew pointed out, your car did not come with the much discussed canister, or any other fuel vapor recovery system.

    Also, you should be able to remove the tank without taking out the rear interior.

    As I see it, you only have three potential problem areas.

    1. The tank, pin holes, leaking fuel line hose on the bottom of the tank, leaking drain plug
    2. The hose connection between the cap and tank. The hose is crack or not properly tightened
    3. The tank level sender gasket leaks, or loose retaining screws.

    Icthos:

    See if these photos help you a bit. Most of
    my TR6 is a 1969. The dashboard is for sure.
    My trunk has pieces of a non-functional,early
    emissions system. I gutted them and am venting
    to the street.

    Here is a photo of my gas tank and I have highlighted
    the components for you. The three items are your major
    suspects for gas fumes in your trunk.

    The tank is very easy to remove from the trunk.
    15 minute job tops. Mine dumped all the gasoline down
    my driveway so I did not have to drain it.

    My advice is try the easy stuff first.

    1. Remove the trunk liner cardboard in front of the tank.

    2. Make sure both clamping bands on the filler pipe
    extension are tightened. Is the rubber extension cracked
    or split? Is it old and dried out?

    3. Take a look and see if you have a small vent pipe on top?
    Yes? Then see it it has a pipe connected to it. Trace
    the plastic piping looking for breaks or splits.

    4. Take a look at your float/gas gauge sending unit. Are
    all 6 screws tight? Is there a gasket present? DPO Pedro
    "forgot" to install a gasket on Crypty. If you don't have
    one; even a non-mechanic guy like me was able to fabricate
    and install one.

    My advice: FWIW maybe a dime. Take the bloody tank out of
    the car, dump out all the rust, sand, dead bugs and paint
    flakes. Give the inside a good cleaning and reinstall it.

    Hope this helps solve your smelly rear.

    What's up with the "blue" tank? Does Crypty know about this color change from black to blue?

    I'll bet that she ain't gonna be happy about this turn of events...............

    If I can't have a functional TR6 at least
    I can have a colorful TR6.

    I am doing my best to rid this poor vehicle
    of every vestige of PDO Pedro. I am changing out
    every K-mart nut nut and bolt, removing all the rubber
    bands and duct tape and for critical items (like gas tanks,
    brakes, suspension parts) I am stripping DPO Pedro totally
    down to bare metal and starting over.

    I will rid this car of DPO Pedro, I swear I will!

    Thanks for all the advice. I pulled the gas tank. It was leaking gasoline in two places: 1) at the sending unit and 2) at the opening at the bottom of the tank. They weren't bad enough to drip, but enough to sure stink up the trunk. In retrospect I am glad I took the suggestion to pull the tank. The rubber seal at the filler cap/tube was not completely seated correctly. Water was running down the side of the filler tube, down the middle seam, and then off to either side - both not visible until the tank is taken out. The pad below the tank was just wet enough to start to rust the bottom of the tank, but not bad enought to rot the body. Now I get to sandblast the tank, check it for leaks, paint it, and hopefully get driving in a week. One last question, there is definately no breather tube on the tank or any evidence of one anywhere on the car - is this normal for a 69?

    Yes, your tank is ok, your model vented through the cap.

    Hey Shawn-

    I'm open for suggestions, buddy!

    Brand new parts are failing with less than
    200 miles on them.

    Distance driven between major repair breakdowns
    is now well under twenty miles.

    On average, I'm now getting less than one hour drive for
    each month sitting on jack stands being repaired. And
    you know the amount of $$ sunk into this beast has not
    been pocket change. And I don't cut corners.

    That's gotta be an evil spirit at work in there
    somewhere.
