TR2/3/3A TR3 Fuel Pump Removal

I am getting ready to replace my TR3 fuel pump and then I realized that the top nut is very difficult to get a wrench on (close to the firewall).

I am sure folks here have done this before, there must be some easy trick that I don't see yet to removing this nut.

I have thought about cutting a 1/2" open-end wrench in half but maybe there is some other trick...

A 1/2 inch u-joint socket, 1/4 inch drive
and a 1.5 inch extension should do it.

That's called a flare wrench, indispensible for hydraulic work...

I've found that snap-on 1/4 inch sockets are thin enough to do the trick on the 3 fuel pump. Many other makes are just too thick walled to fit on/in tight spaces.

Craftsman will work, not as pretty but also not as pricey as Snap-on tools.

Or the cheap alternative... Harbor Freight sells a set of 'wobble' extensions that can be combined to shoot around corners. Not the highest quality but if you only need them for the occasional odd job they can get you thru it.

A 1/2" crows foot wrench that is used with a 3/8 ratchet and an extension will do the trick.I have a craftsmans set of crows foot wrenchs and they tend to be indespensible at times. I'm sure Harbor Freight has them also. On the internet at https://www.harborfreighttools.com I have bought a ton of stuff from them over the years and I have been quite sastified with them.

ISTR I used a 'stubby' Gearwrench last time, and thought it was easier than the universal joint I used before.

Usually SnapOn tools will have the perfect specialty tool just for that need. Because we all have had to find a special tool for one purpose only on our cars, I have (as most of us have) resorted to buying a cheap single tool and using a bench grinder and flat bastard, making a specialty tool that I may or may not ever use again. Would love to own SnapOn, out of my budget.



A little side story on SnapOn tools that will either make you drool or give you a headache.
An area rich guy (and I mean rich) kept bugging the SnapOn truck guy to come to his house so he could peruse his tool selection. Well, after so many requests the SnapOn guy agreed to follow this eccentric dude to his home in the country (actually in St. Francisville, La) where he pulled up in front of a large new wooden building. He told his potential customer to go ahead and look inside the truck (this was one of those large SnapOn trucks) and see what tool he wanted. The eccentric rich dude pointed to one of three huge walls inside the shop all pegboarded over and told him to empty the truck with one of everything. And to come back next week and duplicate the other two walls. He didn't want to walk to get a screwdriver. The SnapOn guy took a vacation after that. The rich guy is now in the nursing home, at a relatively young age. Pity. All those tools.

Bill, a friend of mine was in Saudi, working for a Sheikh, maintaining his race car fleet. The Sheikh ordered THREE each of the entire Snap On catalog contents!
I shudder when I have to buy a single wrench.
