Wedge TR8 woes - coil replacement question

Ignition woes - Part 4.

I'm trying to completely nail down why she will not run over 4,000 RPM.

Since her ballast resistor line has been cut, I replaced the existing Lucas coil 22-C-12 with a new Lucas Sport Coil.

Well, the new coil sure looks a lot better but, of course, it runs even worse now. Now she won't run over 3,000 without breaking up badly. Really badly.

Ideas?

tdskip,

I haven't been paying close attention to this thread but I'll toss in 2¢ worth anyway. I noticed that you are having difficulty sustaining a clean "pull" > 3000RPM.
In my experience breaking up at higher RPM's has usually been caused by a fuel (starvation) problem.
Be sure (if you haven't already) that the fuel pump, fuel filter and the carb jets are all allowing the correct amount of gas into that 3.5L block of cast aluminum.

keep 'on

Hi Tosh - thanks for the fast response.

In theory the fuel flow issues should be solved at this point since I had the hacked wiring, aftermarket fuel pump, and dead original internal fuel pump replaced with a new one and proper wiring.

I haven't independently checked the flow - and think I should just to double check.

The way she breaks up is almost like a rev limited cutting in, and it does it regardless if I'm light or heavy on the throttle.

With the old 22C12 coil she wasn't happy rev'ing over 4,000 but she would just run out of pulling power rather than breaking up badly. That leads me to think ignition.

I will check the fuel flow to make sure that isn't the problem - thanks for the good idea!

Sounds like a bad ignition to me...........but check your fuel filter to make sure it is not getting clogged. I had a similair problem once, and it turned out my gas tank was rusting and clogging up the fuel filter! And the car would just putter out!

The Ballast on these cars RARELY go bad!

Thanks Rod - the fuel filter was just swapped out and looks good so I don't think that is the problem.

I'm thinking I should put a new Lucas 22C23 coil in, but no one seems to carry them.

tds,

Try running the car in a dark garage at night to see if arcing (crossfire) might be an issue. None is best and you can usually see some but too intense is definitely not good.
Have you checked the floats for soaking?
Have you checked the carb linkage (I'm assuming twin Strombergs) for synchronicity. My '6' linkage would slip as the throttle shafts rotated open. Result; one throttle plate open, one not open...not good for running above 2000rpm.
The rev limiter analogy is a good one. "Rev limiters" on our daily drivers function (among other things) by interrupting the fuel flow, most effective.
My gut tells me that if the car starts and idles to operating temp that the ignition system is probably functioning satisfactorily. Ditto for engine/mechanical.

Frustrating, I know.
