Clutch pedal dosn't return back all the way.....

new slave installed and bled. Clutch works fine except sometimes it hangs up a couple inches before complete return. Do I need to adjust the slave rod? The stop bolt at the MC is not original....how do I know what length to adjust that stop? Also has anyone heard of pumping the clutch pedal till firm ,putting a 2x4 between seat and pedal, remove the MC cap, leave overnight. Any residual air in system is supposed to bleed out thru the MC overnight. Karl TR3

I'm assuming from your name that you have a TR3. The pedal should return all the way whether the hydraulic system is bled or not. If the pedal is hanging up, can you lift it the rest of the way by hooking your foot underneath, or pulling it up by hand?? If so, then you may have a problem with the pedal assembly. I had a similar problem, and the clutch pedal part of the assembly was all worn out. I had to fabricate some pieces. It was quite a job. Also, there are return springs on the pedals. Make sure they are still attached.

Check around underneath where the pedals are and work it by hand and see if you can see where the hang-up is.

Thanks martx-5. You might be on to something. Might not be hydraulic problem at all. I just took a look at a blow up pic in the Haynes manual of the clutch & brake pedal assembly. There is a pivot bush, lock and bolt that could be loose or broken. There's a clevis pin, double coil spring washer and split pin that also may be causing problems. I'll check those out too. Just as a point of interest: I have a TR4A that has been sitting for 10 years, that I havent got around to restoring yet, and the brake and pedal assemblies move together when you press one or the other down. Likely the pedal shaft that links them is rusted together. Karl

Re: Clutch pedal dosn't return back all the way.....

My 4A clutch master would perform the same nonsense and make no sense. After checking, adjusting and refitting new seals etc. The master would hold back just that little bit and not fully return. The master rebuild kits do not come with a new spring. Was told it may be the old spring in the master has now compressed just that little bit to lessen its original return tension. Taking the master apart one more time and gentley pulling on the spring to open it up a bit then reassembly, no longer any problem. Many years of use and compression I guess. This simple spring extension did the trick and all has been well ever since. Might be worth a try if all else fails.
