TR3 Fans & Pulleys

I mounted a new pulley on my TR3 water pump and it rubs against the pump housing. Anyone see any reason why I cant put a washer on the pump spindle(or where the pump shaft meets the housing) to get a bit of clearance and stop the whining noise? Also,has anyone tried mounting the TR6 yellow fan, that PeterK has posted a picture of,on a TR3? Wasnt there something about mounting it reversed? and does the rad have to be moved forward? Karl

It sounds to me as if the inside of the new cast pulley has too much metal. Take the pulley off, see where the grinding marks are and grind off some of the inside of the casting. Re-install it and see if it's free to rotate. If not take it off again and grind some more till it spins freely without scraping.

I'd suggest removing metal from the casing itself and not the rotating mass element to maintain the balance. I suspect the interference will be at the external ribs cast into the housing extension and you can carve a notch with a dremal to get the clearance you need.

Wouldnt I be moving the pulley closer to the pump housing if I removed material from the inside of the pulley casting?.....or did you mean taking material off the pulley wheel itself?....or am I missing something?

Some of the new water pumps have this problem. Other new pumps have a machined area on the pump casting where your rubbing occurs. Remove the pulley and look on the pump for shiny spots where the pulley has been rubbing. Lightly grind this area away to stop the noise. Removing mass from the pulley itself will throw it off balance and wear out the bearing in the pump.

Removing metal from the pump housing casting sounds like a good idea. I'm not too familiar with dremels but a friend of mine has one I can borrow. I suppose I'll have to loosen the pulley nut and pull the pulley out a bit to shave off some metal on the housing. What's the ideal bit for doing this?

I don't think I've bought a pump in the last 20 years that didn't require some grinding. I just use a bench grinder to take enough off that the pulley clears... then a bit more. Easier with the pump off the engine of course. If you're not exactly sure where it is grinding, spray it with a bit of black paint so the contact will leave a mark.
