A little Peyote never hurt anyone

I posted another version of this this in the General section, but since Peyote (my vintage race car) is based on a TR3 I thought it was appropriate here as well.

This year I'm taking four months or so to travel to all the classic racetracks in North America hauling the race car of which I am the current caretaker of (Peyote) in an Airstream trailer I converted into a car hauler/camper (Nero). Peyote is a significant, though very homely car that raced at Road America and many other tracks across the midwest in the 60's. I have an overwhelming amount of information on the car on my blog: AllAluminumTour and more being added every day. It's a backyard special based on a 1959 Triumph TR3 built by Bill Ames in 1959 and raced throughout the midwest for many years.

Nero is an interesting device on its own. I got a little carried away building it. It's based on a 1989 34' Airstream Excella that I gutted and rebuilt as half garage, half living space. It's pretty cool--it was the center of a lot of attention during it's maiden voyage at the CSRG race at Infineon last year. There's a photo gallery here.

What I'd like help with is ways to fill the schedule out (the Current Schedule is here. I'm traveling 15,000 miles in four months, and there's lots of time between races--even some weekend holes in the schedule. I'd like to see as much as I can. Car collector shows (especially favoring race cars), great garages, museums, collections, and great restaurants. My definition of a great restaurant is an unpretentious place with a great cook in back and a personable waiter(ess) out front.

I'd also like any and all of your suggestions about things I should see or experience enroute. I'm probably passing near or through your home town at some point. What shouldn't I miss?

I've set up a special page in my blog called Schedule Additions where you can leave your suggestions as comments. You don't have to register to leave a comment but it would be nice if you did so I can give credit where it's due and contact you if I have further questions. I'll also be checking back here for advice. thanks so much for the help

Pretty cool, Bill.

During any of your Road America visits you are welcome to visit here at the Iola Old Car Show offices. We are about 90 miles northewest of R/A. Old Cars Weekly News is published right down the road so I can arrange a tour over there.

We also have a campground where you can park your rig...and you are pretty much guaranteed privacy 'cuz there will be 1799 empty spaces right next to you!

Plus I have a pretty nice shop with a lift and fabrication tools if you need to repair anything or simply do some maintenance.

Bill:

If you are heading to the Northeast please ring me up, this is a place you have got to visit, 5 miles from my house probably some of the finest cars in the country restored & serviced here:

https://www.paulrussell.com/

please check out Ralph Laurens 1937 Bugatti Atlantic. Also a specialist in Gullwings!

I got a private tour of the place when I sold my old Series Rover to an intern working there.

Hi Bill!
Welcome to the forum. I am a member of the FoT and there are a few others here, so we will look forward to the frequent posts we are used to enjoying.
We wouls also all enjoy hearing about (and seeing pictures of) your bike collection, even though you have some of those funny Italian machines!

My only suggestion regarding the tour is to try to fit Mosport Vintage Festival into your plans, the VARAC guys do a great job, and historic F1 cars are featured this year.
Simon.

Yea, Paul Russel's shop is something else! The day I delivered my Series # truck I had to drive it into the garage (old mill bldg) between 2-3 300 sl's with inches to spare to get it on the lift for inspect.

Coulda done alot of damage in a hurry with my big galvi bumper & brush bar!

Bill - I will be attending TRA (Triumph Register of America) National Meet near Watkins Glen. It is being held a few days before the races there and the final concours judging will be on the Thursday, followed by the Awards Banquet on the Friday. Everyone will be heading home on the Sunday, the day of your races, but I'll be watching either from the pit area or along side the track. The organisers at TRA have something planned at the Glen on Wednesday, June 13th probably just as you are arriving. If you see about 50 TRs driving around, that'll be us.

BTW - We met briefly at Portland when I drove my TR3A to VTR in 2000. That trip was 7250 miles all told.

Don, old friend:

Joel and some other Mason-Dixoners were discussing going to the TRA National meet last night at the business meeting.

I am torn between attending and skipping this event. My extreme poverty and bad health say I should stay home in The Soggy Bottom; however, I have always wanted to go to the Glen and yet have never been.

Your post just might have decided me to go. If you are going to be there and stay in the area for a vintage race afterwards, I'm all over that!

Is the lapping of the Glen a definite thing? I heard that they needed a minimum number of cars to make it go.

See you in June!

John,

Do what you can to get a drive around the Glen, and to watch a race from there. It's a wicked cool track!

I always wanted to go to the Glen when I was a kid and read the Road & Track articles covering the F1 races. But when I became old enough to go, they stopped having them!

Last night I made plans to go up to TRA with some Marylanders. I think I convinced one to stay for the race.
