If I would have been closer, Bill, I would have beaten you to it!
Nice score. Now, drive the Silverado Trail, up and over Mt. St. Helena.

Hi Steve,

If you can believe it, I actually haven't taken any detailed photos yet. Here are a couple of when I picked it up last week.

It looks like I'm going immediately into the tear down and not even bother getting it on the road. Too many loose ends.

Looks like the teardown on the GT will have to wait!

I just got an email this morning from Tom in the UK who has a hardtop for it!

Bill,

Where exactly did you buy it at?

Hi Doug,

I bought it near Douglas City, which is about 1 hour west of Redding.

The body is actually quite a bit worse than what shows in the photos. Minimal rust, but lots of dents. Mechanically it's in great shape.

I was suprised to find that this thing has a 4 wheel independent suspension. The springs are a rubber system called Flexitor. The rear end is kind of like a Jaguar, but the brakes are at the wheels.

Apparently, this was quite a decent 4x4 but died during the merge between BMC and Rover Group - The Land Rover won.

I know the area - Eureka is 2 hours West of there.
Spent a lot of time in Trinity County.

Doug, Trinity County is gorgeous. The previous owner James Dunsdon used this for fire road and off roading in Trinity County. It hasn't been registered on the street since 1974.

What is hilarious is that everyone I show photos to says that it is a nice old "military" jeep.

I keep telling them that in my mind it is more a "Let's go hunting for Pheasant Ole' chap" type of vehicle.

I really like the original Fawn paint color, but am tempted to paint it something a little more contemporary just to get away from the military thing.

It is sort of funny how the older LR's (and LR based vehicles) are assumed to be WWII vintage. They are old, but they are all post WWII. 1948 was the first year wasn't it? (for the LR's) Originally marketed as both a tractor and truck for farmers?

I don't know about the United States, but here in Canada the Gipsy was available (in LHD) throughout the production run, I suspect that sales weren't in huge numbers, particularly in comparison to the more popular Land Rover...

One of the British repair garages here in Calgary owns a 1968 Gipsy (LHD), that he hopes to restore I've been told...

Neat looking truck (if you don't mind me referring to it as such) you got there! I can see a definite Land Rover resemblance, but a Jeep? Look at those fenders! Landie all the way. Maybe it's the grill?

The total production run was about 28,000 from 1958-1968. I've been told that the LHD is a rarity in that 28,000, but not a rarity for North America.

Ask your local garage if he has any spares he'd like to part with! Hardtop? Front fenders?
