Differential torque values

I am finishing up the installation of a Phantom Grip LSD unit in my Spridget diff. I need the torque values for the 6 bolts that hold the crown wheel to the differential cage, and the 4 bolts that attach the bearing caps to the differential carrier. Haynes doesn't list these values.

Bolts are torqued baised upon their size. Do a web search it's out there some place, I've seen it.

Mike, the bearing caps are torqued to 65 ft. lbs. I can't find anything written for the ring gear bolts yet, and I won't trust to memory for someone elses use. I'll keep digging.

""""""I need the torque values for the 6 bolts that hold the crown """"""

Depends on the bolts you are using. Certainly dont reuse the originals if your going to "spin the tires" or work the car hard...same goes for those goofy tab locks. Dont use em.

You need a specific grip length on the bolt and also a hardened and ground shim (washer) with a chamfer on the bolt head side i.d. Drilled head for safety wire and red loctite at 45' #. I'd peruse ARP pieces or something G8 which will have too much thread and have to be cut to fit and the heads drilled.

If this is just a low hp driver then use anything thats handy..(I guess).

"""""""e 4 bolts that attach the bearing caps to the differential carrier"""""""

They are studs...not bolts. Use new hardened and ground both sides shims and G8 full height nuts or better yet 12 point washer faced nuts. Klee-n-prime and red loctite as above.

You can substitute blue loctite but you MUST clean and prime correctly.

Sounds like overkill??

Loosing a ring gear at 70 mph is not fun.

Wow, guess that is all important with big torque engines and high HP.

Glad I don't have to learn/do all that.

And where does one obtain such shim/washers? I can drill the bolt heads, have a fixture for that, but i have no idea where to get precision ground, hardened, chamfered washers.

Careful!......How much research did you do?

Not that I'm some kinda know it all.....
I have never used one.

Just heard a lot of nasty stuff about them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
The consensus seems to be FWD ONLY!

And then only as a last resort.

I have heard somewhat the same, although the folks I have talked to run rear drive cars. I was worried about the metal to metal contact too, but since I had to reface the gears anyway to get the unit in, I polished both faces. The OEM spridget gears were terribly rough there, now they are smooth and shiney. Also if you read between the lines of the GRM forum, they have a lot more power than I do. 650hp vs 115hp!!!They are also using sticky slick tires with a lot larger contact area than my 5.00-15's, I don't expect a full LSD, then again, I didn't pay $1600 either.

If it does work well......

yes Jack I kinda go wound up on the diff deal. I prefaced the post with the spinning of tires = abuse.

Phantom grip.....the metal has to go somewhere even at 80 hp. A magnetic drain plug or two is in the cards?

Magnets.......was/is a place called wondermagnet.com or something of the sort??? neobdmenium magnets ultra strong...nice pieces to make a drain plug with. use the tubular ones.....easy.
