Tubeless American Racing Silverstones???

I am running the original Michelins on American Racing Silverstones. These tires were mounted with radial tubes in 1986 and have never been off of the wheels. I plan to upgrade to new tires for next Spring and was wondering if I could go tubeless. I have been told that magnesium is very porous and that I would most likely lose pressure gradually. Does anyone have experience running these mags tubeless.

Thanks,

Frank

Any more gradual than the rubber loses pressure? You would probably be fine. Just check your tire pressure every week or so. If that works out drop to every two weeks or once a month. Should check 'em once a month regardless. Even on new cars. I say give it a shot.

If you truly have real magnesium rims on your car and want to mount modern tubeless tires, consider having the rims X-rayed to check for microscopic cracks. You would never know with tubes.

Also, check out a product called Gibbs Brand protectant and penetrant. Might interest you.

I've been running them tubeless(two different sets of Silverstones) for thirty plus years and have never had a problem with either. One 5" and the other 5.5" both magnesium. While it could be possible to have a leaker, in my experience they are rare. Very durable wheels. If you have the original fake knockoffs take them off in wet weather as they really like to react/corrode with the magnesium or keep the threads heavily coated with paste wax or silicone grease, etc.
