It's as thick and weighty as the Vizard book. Hardcover, too. Looks like it's got some good info in there, especially some fundamental engine stuff that I don't know. Should be a fun read through.

My wife thinks I'm nuts to read something like this cover to cover, but that's probably just what I'll do.

I read a bit through it after dinner tonight. Very text-book, and starts with the fundamentals of how an engine works. Just what I was looking for. I'm sure it will be a while until I get to where y'all would be interested, but it's a great little engine classroom for me.

Absorbing the information in those tomes is what separates a mechanic from a technician. "Volumetric Efficiency" has more'n one definition. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Ahh, but big words do not make a Yoda.

An afinity for a happy engine goes a long way.

And twin SUs make her sing.

Volumetric efficiency is a ratio (or percentage) of what volume of fuel and air actually enters the cylinder during induction to the actual capacity of the cylinder under static conditions. Therefore, those engines that can create higher induction manifold pressures - above ambient - will have efficiencies greater than 100%. Volumetric efficiencies can be improved in a number of ways, but most notably the size of the valve openings compared to the volume of the cylinder and streamlining the ports. Engines with higher volumetric efficiency will generally be able to run at higher RPM, and thus power settings as they will lose less power to moving air in and out of the engine.

Lots to digest, but it's a long, cold winter here (18 degrees F this morning). I'm lacking a lot of the fundamental understanding, so these books are very welcome. Keeps the brain active.

that goes for me. it may take a hammer to make any of this stick, but at least I will be a little smarter for having tried to understand it (electrical by trade). i also like the pictures!

Moss has had Vizard. He rocks, but I'd be liing if I told you I understand much of it. After going through it once, it is a lot of fun to go back and find info about different stuff. En60 crank, which head is better, what does something else mean, it is all there. The price on the book seems steap when buying, but after purchase, there is no regret. Jack, isn't a sc just more better.

IMHO, Read a bit, think about it, re-reead what you are unsure of. Digest and read on.

Yup. And do a lot of 'fiddling' with the parts under study as you read.

Jack: Point I was pressing is that by absorbing the contents of those books over time, they will have the knowledge as to WHY they are doing various operations instead of "tab -A- in slot-B-" kind of work... and that "Volumetric Efficiency" can apply (METAPHORICALLY) to the mind and knowledge as well as to internal combustion engines!

*sheesh* Get onna BUS here.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

I read maybe 10 pages of the Sunnen last night, and I'm letting it settle in before the next round. I'm normally a very fast reader, but I really want to understand this stuff. Good fun.

OK, so what is the "Sunnen book"? I have Vizard's, but I am always up for trying to get smarter.
