The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Well I found out the PO had left out the thermostat so I got that replaced today and checked for any leaks before heading out for a drive. A tiny drip drip of antifreeze was right under the harmonic balancer area, and I had seen this before a few times but always thought I had fixed it (tightended hose clamps, tightened water pump bolts etc). Well this time I got mirrors and lights and jack stands and eventually figured out it was coming from the water pump itself. Not good at all. So I investigated further, and found the Good (first picture, top of pump, opening fairly dry), the Bad (bottom of pump, opening filled with antifreeze, evidence of big time leak) and the Ugly (don't ever look inside that pipe if your pump really is 40 years old). Fortunately the inside of the block around the cylinder walls looked fairly clean so I assume the PO that had the engine worked on made sure the block was cleaned even though they didn't bother with a new pump. It's pretty bad /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif when you call a Usual Suspect for more parts, they know you by first name basis, don't even ask for CC number, just ship the stuff out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Anyway hope everybody has a good weekend /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Amazing how long some of these parts lasted. And equally amazing is how bad they look after 40 years.

Nope BH, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif that is not an original pump did you notice the straight nose on it. The only source of that pump I know of in the US was Healey Surgeons.---Keoke
