SS Exhaust Systems - BELL vs. FALCON

I’d like to replace the entire exhaust system on my Healey BJ-7 and upgrading to stainless steel. Installed now is a custom mild steel exhaust system with aluminized (dual) separate glass packs that’s starting to age and may be affecting engine performance due to its design.

By comparison the Healey’s stock system may have better balance since exhaust flow is into one muffler (and/or resonator) providing needed back pressure.

Anyway, when considering complete stainless steel exhaust systems, is there any different between FALCON, which is readily available, and BELL with regard to sound, performance, fitment, cost etc. Thanks in advance for sharing your opinions and experiences. GONZO

Gonzo, go with Bell they most closely resemble the original exhaust fitments so SHG tells me---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Falcon systems are cheaper but do not fit well out of the box. They are close enough to install with some spacers but not a direct fit. If you are good at SS welding or if Falcon corrected their mount points since I got mine 5 years ago. ............

Hey Mitch,
Just a heads up. Do any parts, original, aftermarket, borrowed, home made ever just plug in?

I spent a lot of time on my exhaust, mostly modifying the support brackets to take the not perfect fit of the exhaust, off them.

One of the problems is, that if the metal/rubber support brackets have any unnecessary strain on them, the rubber will eventually separated from the metal bracket it is glued too. Ask me how I know that.

We live close to each other. Your welcome to come take a look see at mine and I'd be happy to help should you need a hand or someone to run get you a Band-Aid. No Healey job would be complete with a scratch, bruise or cut.

Cheers, Roger

Based on information shared by helpful individuals, a BELL SS exhaust system will be installed in about 6 months. Fortunatly, a BJ-7 system is easier to install b/c it lacks the additional resonator and associated hangers, clamps etc. Until then the custom glass pack system will have to suffice. Thanks again for the impressions - Roger, thanks for your kind offer - we should plan to meet (FYI Hot August Nights - Danville admits only pre-60's cars to display so our car's don't qualify.) Odd, I bought two Falcon stainless systems, one 10 years ago for a 72 MGB and one 4 years ago for a 1955 MGTF 1500 and both systems were a direct bolt up with no issues. Everything fit perfect and both systems are on the cars now. PJ

My BJ7 Bell muffler is not a straight through design. You can see blanking inserts when looking down the bores. The noise level is less but the resonance points are less noticeable too so the exhaust "song" is less distinctive. I am not able to feel a difference in performance.

FWIW - my Monza exhaust's loudness (85DB) was getting to me, so I briefly reinstalled my 1.5" Bell SS tailpipe with my Moss mild-steel muffler. Just as loud as the Monza but with nasty stainless steel resonances thrown in. Probably works better with Bell's own muffler.
