    Clutch advice needed for TR6

    I want to replace my clutch and was considering the "Magic Clutch Kit" from TRF. I would be getting the Koyo bearing with the kit as depicted here: https://www.zeni.net/trf/TR6-250GC/i...=C&page=53

    Any thoughts or experience to be heard? I spoke with Dave at TRF, whom I've worked with over the years and he helped develop this arrangement, which includes the Sachs PP, stock disc and Koyo bearing (Land Cruiser setup).

    I will not use a Gunst.

    Why not the Gunst? I ask, because I've had trouble with the carrier sticking even though the input shaft on the transmission was prepped correctly. I'm generally unhappy with the set up as I also occasionally have some slippage under full power in 1st and second gear (about 140 hp at the wheels)with the LUK pressure plate. I previously used the TRF "magic kit" with the KOYO bearing and SACHS clutch. I was very happy, as I experienced no problems whatsoever.

    I have not had good luck with the Gunst and Borg & Beck PP combo. It makes a constant squealing noise (until pedal is depressed to about half way down and the same coming back out) because it will not turn with the PP no matter how much spring pressure is applied via the spring kit supplied. Now with that being said, Mr. Gunst himself insists that it works well, but ONLY with the LUK kit. I'm stuck in the middle of an expensive debate, so out it goes in in goes the TRF complete kit, especially since you seem happy as several other folks that I spoke to have been.

    I've had good luck with my "Magic Clutch Kit" so far. I put it in last year and have had no problems.

    Just put my new clutch in this winter. Purchased it from Scott Harper from Team Triumph in Warren OH. I believe it is similar to the magic clutch. I believe I paid around $200.00.
    I have maybe 2000 miles on it, so it's still too early to comment.

    Have you looked at HVDA hydraulic throw out bearing?

    Looks pretty neat. If I ever need to pull my gearbox again (knock on formica), I'm probably going to install that.

    Yes, I have. My installer, Eric, of Her Majesty's Service won't intall it. He has some issues with the design and past history.

    If it's worth anything, Dave Crane, a guy that has done many, many, many TR restorations here in North Carolina, recommended to me the Sachs with the Toyo bearing. Of course, me being a hard-headed goober did the Gunst thang, seems to work ok for me.

    Squealing you say? Why yes, my Magic Clutch squeals also. (Though not a loud squeal.) Have heard that this is caused by the the throw out bearing lightly contacting the spring fingers on the pressure plate. Otherwise, the clutch, aside from a stiff pedal, works well.

    Tosh, mine is loud enough to be heard 20 feet away from the car and I have to depress the pedal nearly 1/2 of the way down to stop it. To add to the party, it does the same thing on the way back up. And yes, I do have the recommended Gunst return spring pulling it back along with another very stiff brake spring coming from another angle, which keeps the squeal from being totally unbearable. I do have a new cross shaft, case bushings, fork and pins all installed by John at Quantum when I bought the O/D from him.
    From conversations with others, it seems that the Borg & Beck PP does not like the Gunst, but I just want to get rid of it all, once and for all, including the darn squeal.
    BTW, I love the color of your car and the blackout affect. What kind of wheels are those?

    Paul, do you think it might be possible that the throw out bearing is not spinning until it has more preassure on it and that the squeeling is coming from it sliding on the pp fingers?

    No doubt that it's sitting stationary while the pressure plate turns and grinds away under it. It's not supposed to do that with the spring installed to hold pressure against it and I even have a second heavier spring on it. This is the third (3) bearing with the same problem and it will be the last.

    It simply takes an excessive amount of pressure (1/3 to 1/2 pedal) to make the noise stop and that is unacceptable to me.

    Ah feel yer pain.
    What is worrysome about these noisy clutches is that you are never quite sure about the longevity contained therein or why such a tried and true mechanism should be an ongoing source of concern (irritation) to the "community". I mean, light car, low horsepower, this should be a no brainer as regards reliability.

    IVe done Borg and Beck with stock TO, Laycock with KOYO, Sachs with KOYO and most recently LUK with Gunst. All worked OK for a while, the Sachs/KOYO lasting the longest...the "problem" with this set up is the pedal effort is too much for my wife to drive it. Maybe not so much of a "problem". I've found the LUK clutch to be to weak for a mod. engine. I'm anticipating a catastrophic prssure plate failure with less than 20K on this set up. Too many drag races I guess... Having driven a couple of 6's with the hydraulic bearings, and toyota transmissions, I'll be dispensing with my TR OD tranny at the next opportunity.

    I have a Gunst TO with an AP pressure plate with a BB clutch plate sitting at my office, waiting for a new ring gear to arrive. Will do a lot of research before I "lift" that big heavy booger again. It's getting hard at 60 (I wish) to push that darn thing out.

    Well, for the looks of it, those who have not had a problem with Gunst all appear to be using something other than B&B. And the Sachs seems to be OK with the Koyo, with the exception of Tosh's "not loud" squeal. I may just get a stock bearing to have ready and take some serious measurements when the clutch is mounted and the T/O is mounted to compare the space between bearings and pressure plate, respectively. If one is too close, the other will go in. I don't need any bearing "lightly" rubbing a pressure plate in any way, shape or form. Except for the Gunst, none are designed to fit this way.

    This will be the 4th time and I'm not looking for a 5th.
