Re: TR8 Update - 6/7

Just got back from the body shop... The interior, jambs, areas under the boot and bonnet are cut in. Outside gets hit with color this afternoon - may be home first of next week. WOW!

Heard from the machine shop - pistons are on order - main and rod bearings will be standard.

I am dating myself, but I remember when those ads ran proclaiming that the TR7/8 were the shape of things to come.

Originally, I was going to stay with Poseidon Green. But then at the Townsend show I saw an MGB that was recently painted an awesome color. Tried my best to match it, and I think I came close. He called it Mitsubishi "Pearl Red", but I couldn't find it anywhere. So, I did some digging and found what I think is pretty close. It's a current color called Lava Red. Since I'm making some other changes (Holley, Edelbrock, cam, etc.), I'm not concerned with originality any more. I'll get some pics when I pick it up.

Re: TR8 Update - 6/7

The more I think of it, the more originality seems to be a waste of energy for me. My goal is to keep it on the road as long as possible. I have no problem with folks who do the concours thinng, my path is just different. However, I do have a TR7 Spider and I am going to extreme lengths to make sure my new seat upholstery has the same pattern as the original, so what do I know?

But the Spiders are holding/increasing value quicker than other wedges. So maybe that is not such a bad idea. Now if it were a plain jane TR7. Do what you want. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just wondering...where are you sourcing your seat fabric, and if you're doing carpet, same thing? I haven't found a source for either, and with a few exceptions, my Spider is pretty original and I'd like to keep it that way.

Re: TR8 Update - 9/29

Here's the latest:

Got the tranny in yesterday. (WHEW!) The dash and instruments are in (clock even works!). Gave up on the oil pressure gauge conversion, for now anyway. Waiting on a couple of carpet pieces, so I can finish that and install redone seats. Radiator and A/C condenser should go in this weekend, then I can finish up the wiring and do all the "little" stuff.

The Holley and the headers sure look good!

Can't wait to see the finished product Mickey. As for the originality thing, it just doesn't make any sense to me to validate bad design, faulty components and inferior workmanship by doing it all over again, at least for a driver.

You're going to love the Holley setup and the headers. You can add an oil pressure gauge quite easily under the dash, but be forewarned, you'll be shocked at the low oil pressure these engines exist on. Keep us posted.

Re: TR8 Update - 9/29

Thanks, Tom. This has been a great project, but I've really had a hard time putting more than a couple of hours in at a time. It's difficult to get a lot accomplished that way, but now that I'm getting close, the rest "should" go fairly quickly.

As for originality, been there, done that, with the TR3, and the MGB. This one will appear original, except for the Holley and headers. Even the paint color will seem original, though it's quite a bit lighter than the Bordeaux Red they used.

I'll get some pics after I clean it up a bit - it's pretty dusty sitting in the shop for so long! But now that the tranny and engine are in, I can roll it out and give it a much-needed bath.

Re: TR8 Update - 9/29

Sounds like it is going well! I put the Holley setup in my TR8 about 6 months ago, and I am NOW very happy with it. Took a little while to get it tweaked just right, getting the idle, and the choke where you like it etc. So do not get discourgae if it doesnt go perfect the first time!
