Okay, we all know Rostyle rear ends are wider than wire wheel rear ends...but the axles are also different (not just the hubs - the axles themselves)...Rostyle axles are 22-3/4" long from rear of bearing to end of axle; wire wheel axles are 21-7/8" same locations.

If you want to learn all about MGB rear ends & how to hybrid them, go to https://www.theautoist.com/racing.htm & scroll down to 11 Febuary 2006....or go to https://www.theautoist.com & scroll down to today's updates & click on 'racing'.

Lots of photos & measurements

Now, I'm going to install the rear end - for the 1st of many times!

Is this on the GRM car? Did you ever find some longer lugbolts that'll work on the wheels?

Back out - gotta do a little machining on the holes in the differential housing spring perches & the shock absorber plate - that or put my 'pucks' back in the lathe

Well, its back out...I'm machining the center holes in the shock absorber plates out to 1-1/8" so my 'puck' will drop through....gonna do the same thing tomorrow with the center holes in the differential housing spring perch...I want this rear end locked down with no movement or slop.

When you quote the weights, your picture shows the new style with the diff, but the old style bare. Are the weights for the stuff as shown, or just for housings in all cases?

Nope - the new style (Salisbury) is also stripped...remember, the gears go into it from the rear...only thing in it is the pinion gear which weighs about 3 pounds...& gears go into the banjo from the front...those weights are stripped housings!

You know, installing axles is hard work...& I'm only putting them in to test wheel location - the 3rd member's not even in the differential...gotta take them back out again - & they don't even like to go in!

Oh yeah, Jim, I'm just wondering how many times I'm gonna pull it! I know I'll pull the axles at least 1 more time & take the housing back out from under the car 1 more time also....

Offline
how many times did you pull the engine? - you work like my dad. One time he pulled a 65 mustang transmission 4 times in one afternoon. (almost funny now, but he was cussing),first time, he got up and saw the box with the brand new clutch in it, second time, he forgot to change the pilot bushing. Not sure what happened the last 2 times - I was just trying to stay outof his way.

I've pulled that engine so many times I don't want to think about it....its amazing what you go through building a hybrid like this one - the entire car, not just the axle

...I'll let you get on the creeper & slide up under her when you come up

OK, it wasn't funny. I have a distinct memory of that.
