/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif H'OK, I go down to the local Pull-N-Save today. The set a '69 Spit out there and I have a buddy itchin' for parts...(yeah, the @#$%$%$# is rust free too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif ) Anywhoo, we were talkin' to the dude in charge about buying the tub before they scrapped it when he say's, "I've got Jensen Healey that just came in if you want a real hotrod..." I bought my GRM Challenge Mustang(callender Oct. '06 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif ) from them about 5 years ago so,they treat me allright. So I go out and have a look. 100% complete car(minus an air cleaner) Body solid and other than a crappy paint job,(ugly white, white top, wife hates white cars more than Spitfires in general) in good shape. 57k on the clock. No rust. Interior dirty, the dash has a couple of cracks, and the d-seat is starting to fall apart. The motor is free, and the t-belt looks good. Needless to say, a deal was struck. Bad thing, a title may not be attainable. Originally, I didn't care, but we flat towed it 50 miles, and I kinda like it... I'm sure that can be fixed. So what do expect from one of these? I know nothing about them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Woo Hoo! Welcome to Jensen Healeydom!

They’re great cars (if I do say so myself) and great conversation pieces, almost totally unknown to most people.

The first thing to do is join the Jensen Healey Preservation Society.

From there you can figure out just what you have and where you want to take it.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifWell, I got it to start today. Cecked the oil, and coolant. Both OK. Pop the cap and cleaned the terminals. Pulled all the plugs, shot a bit of oil down the cylinders. Cranked it, OK. Reinstalled the plugs, put about a gallon of fresh gas in the tank. The tank was already dry, so I lucked out. The fuel pump didn't want to cooperate, but a few taps from my British pecision electrical adjustment hammer got her workin'. Although I had to crank it a bit, it fired up. Now for the bad news. It has very low oil pressure. I only ran it for a grand total of 20 seconds at little more than an idle, so I don't think I hurt anything that wasn't already hurt. It may have been the gauge, but the bottom end did not sound too happy. The oil on the stick looked pretty good when I checked it. It was a little on the low side however.(bottom mark on the stick) Maybe that's what's wrong. Any suggestions?

As has already been said..............good save! A little rough around the edges, but okay. Low oil pressure on those engines is a concern, might need a new bottom end, which is probably why she found her way to the scrapper in the first place.

Regardless, looks a fun project.

It's sort of funny that you got that from a scrapyard, when 90% of the stuff I see on Ebay is in far worse condition...

Nice save.

Actually, the story is this. The car was donated to a charity. I don't know which one just yet. If there is nothing wrong with the car, I'm not sure who they sell them through. If there is something wrong with a vehicle, depending on the car, it will either go tho Pull-N-Save, or to Klode's, a local salvage auction broker. Here's the kicker, even though I actually had the title in my hand, they would not let me have it. I got a receipt that states the vehicle is for "parts only." I was told that since the charity is in California, then the vehicle would need to physically go to California, and have a vin verification done there, and then the charity could get a clean Ca. title. IMHO, I think that's gotta be BS because some of the cars make to the big auction. I'm pretty sure I can get a state assigned title for it. I just hafta play the game. The guy who I actually need to talk to about the deal(the man with the dealer's license)is outa town until Wed. We'll see then. Way I see it, worst comes to worst, I could part it out for 10X what I have in it, but then again I'd hate to do that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif On a related note, the guy at the yard said he'd rather see someone who knows what it is get it. If he put out in the yard it would most likely be crushed nearly complete because the average customer out there is looking to keep his mini van or truck on the road...

I had to "play the game" recently when registering my TR8 in Fort Collins. The original title had an extra letter in the VIN and I was fool enough to want the title to match the car.

Keep a smile on your face and be very patient when dealing with the county clerks office. They aren't sure how to react when your not yelling and can then be quite helpful. The most frustrating part though was seeing the "telephone game" in action at that level of government. I would tell the first contact what was wrong, they would go talk to their supervisor, who would then go to another desk and that person would call someone at the state level. When I asked if I could talk to the person at the state level directly you would have thought I had run over there dog. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

Ultimately it all got worked out. It took time, but since I wasn't irate at having to jump through some hoops they were quite willing to go above and beyond to get the job done. Plus, my blood pressure stayed on the low side. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

You might also try calling the county clerks office, tell them whats up and ask if there is someone at the state level that you can talk to about it. They can't give you that "ran over the dog look" over the phone.

Your low oil pressure could be from a worn oil pump. As I understand it the 907 oil pump runs very tight clearances. Then again, it could be as simple as having the wrong viscosity oil in it. Again, the JHPS or a Lotus group would be the place to check for real expertise.

Without any service history you’ll want to replace the timing belt (negative clearance with the piston tops, break a belt and you will bend valves! With four per cylinder so you thrash them two at a time.).

You’ll want to do a valve adjustment too. With 57k on the motor it should have been done a few of times already but a lot of owners never bothered to follow the specified service intervals (the manual says to adjust valves every 12,000 miles!). Burnt valves are common.

Parts can be pricey and service a bit more involved for the 907 than most people are used to for a 70’s vintage powerplant but keep in mind that at that time it was one of the most advanced engines that had ever been put into a street car. It’s a very cool piece of engineering, all aluminum, DOHC, 4-valves per cylinder. No other LBC of the era came close.

frankenstang, I also know where there is another complete engine. Oh and possibly another complete car, it's in worse shape but maybe a good parts car or title car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'll have to check and see if its still there. Both are in Fort Collins.

Swift, that would be great. Hehe, I've played the title game in the past too. I have the # to someone at the state level. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I must have gotten spoiled living in the PRB, all the clerks were nice and helpful. Then I moved to Larimer county. Evil, evil, clipped hair mean faced women at my branch. One of them likes to remind me when I'm in there that "you're not a dealer, so you'd better not sell more than 3 cars this year, we'll investigate you!" Real buz kills... Oh well.

Ah, I have had dealings with similar people in the past. I have this theory that before people are employed as beaurocrats in any capacity, they have to first go in for surgery to perform a charisma bypass.

Almost hate to own up to this but: I've a J-H engine sittin' out in the elements here. Been over a decade so I expect it's landfill... spun bearing, and I bought engine/trans for the 5-speed tranny. "All or nothing" was a condition of sale, so... gearbox for the +2, and some 2-litre yard-art.

...scuttles away....

[/ QUOTE ] Boy, what's the world coming to--Boulder more helpful than Larimer County? I always thought the idea in Boulder was to raise home prices to the level that everyone but the wealthy moved to Louisville, then lock the gates! How did anyone with the collection of cars you've got manage to avoid being ridden out of town on a rail? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I have always been on very good terms with the Jeffco clerks office. Only trouble was with the Lakewood police threatening to tow one of my cars if I didn't move it!
